It looks like Samsung will be skipping yet another Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update in favor of an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update with Australian carrier Vodafone confirming that its Samsung Galaxy Nexus will remain on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean until Samsung is able to deliver Android 4.3.
Earlier this month, we learned that Australian carrier Telstra, which had been planning to update its Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.2, would not be updating the device with Android 4.2. Instead, the device will be updated directly to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the new version of Android Jelly Bean. The reason isn’t entirely clear but it appears that Samsung has cancelled the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.2 update and perhaps the Galaxy S3 Android 4.2 update as well though the latter remains unconfirmed.
While it was initially overlooked, it appears that another Samsung device will be skipping Android 4.2 in favor of Android 4.3 as Vodafone Australia has confirmed that its Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which was never updated with Android 4.2, will be shifting to Android 4.3 instead.
What this means is that owners of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will remain on Android 4.1.2 until Samsung and Vodafone can roll out Android 4.3. Given that Android updates typically don’t hit carrier-branded Nexus devices until months after the initial roll out, it could be quite sometime before Samsung and Vodafone issue this update.
This also serves as another sign that Samsung is throwing its weight behind Android 4.3 rather than Android 4.2. The company has yet to confirm any Android 4.3 updates but it’s clear that the company is hard at work on the updates given the cancellation of Android 4.2 and given that it should be close to getting the update out to its Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition.
Unfortunately, it means that owners of older devices like the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note 2 are going to have to wait while it prepares the software for arrival.
This won’t impact the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 update because the device is already on Android 4.2 and has been for quite some time now. Google already confirmed Android 4.3 through its developer page so now it’s up to Samsung and Verizon to get the update out to owners of carrier’s only Nexus smartphone.
