Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.1 Update Coming Soon?
There seems to be an update to Android 2.1 for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 coming soon. Sony Ericsson showed a demo of the new features introduced in this upgrade on their YouTube channel. Both of AT&T’s way outdated Android phones will come into the modern era when this update makes it. Dell recently announced an Android 2.2 update coming for the Dell Streak.

Would the promise of 2.1 coming soon make you think twice about purchasing this phone today? The hardware is really nice, but the OS was just slow and old.

Huh? I believe it has been common knowledge for some time that the update is coming at the end of October now. Perhaps you didn’t believe the news- or Sony Ericssons original ‘Q4’ ETA for Éclair on the X10… Given the tradition for delays in releasing Android updates, perhaps this is no surprise… We await, wondering if there will be any form of multitouch, how bad the battery life will be with live wallpapers, and why they bothered forcing Timescape upon us in the first place… Oh, and looking forward to HD video :D

There is no Multitouch in the 2.1 update, the hardware doesn’t support it.

Hahahaha, silly obscene name to post negatives, you haven’t even seen what it may or may not be able to do yet, and if you struggle with this phone, you really shouldn’t be using a smartphone full stop, tip, turn the GPS off and you will get a good battery life, tip, don’t have a zillion unused apps on the phone, tip, go to the Dr if your hearing isn’t good enough to hear people through this phone, tip, go get an iPhone4 and watch your money drain away on contract charge, tip, look at the said iPhone4 and realise the X10 is like a fine suit compared to a pair of jean’s, all I read is illiterate people slamming this phone across the web in reviews, and all I can say is they simply don’t know their way around it and label it bad, example….got dis fone yesterday an its pants, the batteree dont last long an i cant do dis and i cant do dat, c’mon, please, it’s power spec’s alone blow most other phones out of the water, so enjoy your Athlon X2 phone, I’ll stick with my i7 comparison thx. ;->

haha your an idiot dude….this phones hardware is great but common the software is garbage and everyone knows it. Timescape is a joke, mediascape a whole other joke and taking 8 months to release an update is insane. Instead of taking the time to lock down the bootloader maybe they should have spent time updating the OS. Look the bottom line is the phone looks great sitting on the table but next to a droid x, desire hd, evo or droid with the screen on it looks old and im still not getting 16m colors with the update! And the reason the battery life sucks is because 1.6 power management is BAD the upgrade to 2.x was one of its greatest improvements. and chris i have the same problem with my phone the phone turns off at 25%….i need the 2.1 update so i can sell this severely hindered piece of hardware to get the new mytouch and get my easily set up wifi calling app!! bye bye truphone

Which update is that then? can’t be the 2.1 one, it isn’t released yet? if you mean a minor one earlier, I don’t think it was designed with your colour expectation anyway, and there is no version 2.0, the phone still comes with 1.6 installed, and if you find media and timescape modes a bad thing, please don’t open the contacts on any phone, smacks of SE thought of something the rest didn’t and folks don’t like it, works fine on mine, no lag, no sticking etc.
All smartphones eat the battery, so how do you figure it to be bad management, leave your Tom Tom on for two hours and see how much battery is left in that.
If it turns off at 25% you obviously have done something to it, probably left it on top of a speaker magnet of something, or have no idea what battery conditioning is when you first get the phone, like I said, user error blamed on the phone, and one last thing, this be all and end all Android update thing is not much more than the latest version of Firefox for updates, you ppl go carzy like as if one phone is going to remain like a ten yr old PC and the other like a rocket.
p.s, do you use the voice commands on it? I suppose their rubbish as well, well actually they’re not, but if you are having trouble, learn to speak more clearly, even a shop assistant will say pardon if you mumble at them.
SESUCKS, nice name and highly predictable DUDE! lol, why you would need 16 million colours on a 4 inch screen defy’s logic.

“i need the 2.1 update so i can sell this severely hindered piece of hardware to get the new mytouch and get my easily set up wifi calling app!! bye bye truphone ”
So what you really mean is the X10 is old in your eyes now and to keep up with all the other surferdudes in your world you need to sell it to be able to afford the Mytouch?
What’s the issue with WiFi then, you either connect to a known spot and put the WPA into the phone, or hope to find an open hotspot, or use the phone network internet.
Tip, don’t sign up for two year deals in future if you know you will want the latest toy again in 9 mths time.

Wao! I really like this phone. I agree with the statement :”The hardware is really nice, but the OS was just slow and old”. Any ways this article is really interesting and worthwhile. Thanks for posting such a wonderful article.

Hello everybody, I’m Alexander from Romania.
Until recently I was the happy owner of an Xperia X10. It’s not that I’m not the owner anymore, it’s just that I’m not happy anymore.
I just want to tell you from the beginning that I wanted to buy a Samsung Galaxy S, but one of my friends tuck me into buying his X10. It was a plain and simple transaction, my friend didn’t care about updates, he only liked the X10 for its design, but he needed the money, that’s why he sold it to me.
So, on Nov 24 I found out (only because of my repeated update checks and not because SE sent an update notification) that Android 2.1 is available in my country. I followed all the steps and updated my phone. After restoring the saved data, big surprise: the phone would log off the mobile network every 2 minutes. I had to deactivate my PIN code in order to prevent the destruction of the phone (hitting X10 against the wall to achieve that seemed like a good idea at that time), but logging of the network was annoying (that’s the least to say), especially during phone calls. And when the phone was ringing, the caller info & the other items of the incoming call screen would disappear completely, leaving only the nice blue & black color variations; I had to guess where the ‘answer’ button is and how to slide it to the right (luckily this was simplified with the 2.1, with the curved line of the 1.6 it would have been much more difficult to guess). The only solution was reinstalling the software, which worked well.
And now back to the actual update. Apart from the obvious improvements (the screen doesn’t lock anymore after a call in ended, saving Drafts in Messages (officially, and not by pressing the ‘Home’ Button after finishing typing & adding no recipient at that stage) is possible, 5 home screens, more icons per screen & the improved screen layout, text typing layout and the others already mentioned in the official press release), there are some major back draws (for the update or for the overall functionality, regardless of the Android version):
1. The Timescape function is defective with the 2.1: some of the tiles from Facebook only have the photo and the name of the person, with no text. After accessing the profile by tapping the tile, I am prompted to one’s daily horoscope. Wasn’t it supposed to prompt me to the status message? And the Facebook account updates very slowly/not at all and keeps updating even after I close Timescape (the ‘updating’ icon from the upper taskbar is visible at most of the time I have the X10 turned on + wi-fi on & functional). Not to mention that Timescape closes repeatedly without prompting it to close.
2. Once the synchronization starts, sure as hell not even Doomsday can stop it (we do have Doomsday every day here in Romania – jokin’).
3. With the 2.1 update, the ‘relationship’ between my phonebook and Facebook is a wreck (that’s an understatement as well)!! It was much better with the 1.6 when one was able to associate contacts MANUALLY between the phonebook and Facebook straight from the phone. Now Facebook overrides the phonebook, even with sync deactivated (from Facebook Android Application (updated)/settings/sync contacts/DON’T SYNC) (isn’t this breaking terms & conditions + invasion of privacy?). And, believe it or not, in my country 2 different people can have the same first name & surname, which makes very annoying to have your actual girlfriend Mary in your phonebook, but with Mary’s (ex-girlfriend) picture from Facebook, Mary ex-girlfriend which is not anymore in your phonebook – how’s that for a divorce case? If I chose facebook/settings/sync contacts/sync with existing contacts – that’s Iraqi War, as for ‘sync all’ – that’s Star Wars + WW III. I had to restore the phonebook a few times and I had to access manually 20% percent of my phonebook, then ‘edit/menu button/separate/save’ in order to separate the (unfortunate) 20% phonebook contacts from Facebook contacts (same person or, worse, another person), even thou, I repeat, I have chosen in the first place NOT to sync the contacts between my phonebook and Facebook!!!!!
4. The in-call volume is still very low, I have to press the phone against the ear very hard.
And now for my fellow X10 owners: stop asking if there’s gonna be an upgrade in terms of screen colors!! SE does software updates, they should replace the whole screen (as a hardware component) in order to upgrade the actual screen to 16M.
That’s about everything I can remember now, if something else will come up I will get back!
Bottom-line: As a happy owner of SE phones (T28, K750, V630, W995, Aino (present)), I’m about to go back to Nokia or to start a ‘relationship’ with Samsung if SE’s new X10 update will not be Android 2.3 with all the above-mentioned flaws fixed!!

This phone is okay, the battery life is quite bad even for a modern smartphone, and tbh the lack of a decent flash is annoying on a phone that boasts a 8mp camera and yet my mates iphone 4 5mp camera is far superior due to overall lense quality and OS build quality i think im going to upgrade to a htc in the near future.
