Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system continues to press onward toward new smartphones and tablets and today, Sony confirmed new Xperia Lollipop release date details on stage during its press conference at CES 2015 in Las Vegas.
In November, Google started rolling out its brand new Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system to Nexus smartphones and tablets. Slowly but surely, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update has started hitting non-Nexus devices including smartphones like the Moto X, Samsung Galaxy S5 and the LG G3. Android 5.0 Lollipop is also heading to Sony Xperia devices in the future as well.
Last year, Sony confirmed a ton of new information including the devices that it will be upgrading to Google’s latest operating system. The list includes the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The company’s roll out still hasn’t begun though that will finally change in a few weeks.
Today during its press conference at CES 2015, Sony announced new and concrete Xperia Lollipop release date plans. Sony says that it will start rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the Xperia Z3 series next month. The company did not confirm a specific date for the update’s arrival only confirming the month of February.
Sony’s Android 5.0 Lollipop push for the Xperia Z3 will kick off a roll out that will span across a number of devices and should take a number of months to complete. Sony’s Xperia Lollipop release dates will vary based on carrier and based on region. And like other Android release dates, the roll out should be a bit unpredictable.
The new comes on the heels of a previous confirmation from Sony which put the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 Lollipop release dates in the early part of 2015. It’s not clear when the company plans to push out an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z2 series though we suspect that the company will deliver it to variants starting this year.
In the United States, the Verizon Xperia Z3V will be getting Android 5.0 Lollipop. That update was confirmed several weeks ago through Sony’s social media accounts though the company failed to confirm a specific release date. That release date will likely be left up to Verizon, a carrier that’s notorious for its internal testing process and unpredictable release dates. For now the Xperia Z3V, like the regular models, will remain on Android 4.4 KitKat.
It’s not clear if Sony will dish out Android 5.0 Lollipop or if it will, like Samsung, make the jump to Google’s latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop. Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is similar to Android 5.0 only it carries a number of crucial bug fixes on board. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop roll out is still producing Android 5.0 updates though Samsung is expected to deliver Android 5.0.1 to devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge later this year.
With an Android 5.0 Lollipop roll out now set for February, Sony will keep pace with its top competitors. HTC is expected to push out its own Android 5.0 Lollipop updates for the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 later this year while LG and Samsung are also expected to spread their Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to new devices in the weeks ahead.
