Sony Xperia S Android 4.0 Update Rolling Out by Early June
It looks like Sony’s flagship Android smartphone, the Sony Xperia S, will be getting its boost up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by early June at the latest.
A report from UnwiredView, citing a post on Sony’s forums, indicates that Sony is planning to push out Google’s latest mobile operating system to the Xperia S as early as late May and as late as early June.
That means that owners of the device should expect to see the update roll out in the next few of weeks.
Like most Android devices, the roll out will probably take a staggered approach with unlocked versions of the device seeing the update first which will be followed by a roll out to carrier branded versions of the device.
That likely means that carrier-branded versions of the Xperia S will have to wait a little longer for the update.
Sony has been extremely forthcoming about details in regards to Android 4.0 updates for its phones. While the timing may not be what some owners want, the openness in regards to the situation should be welcomed.
Originally announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the Sony Xperia S started shipping worldwide during the month of February. It’s not officially available on any carrier in the United States. Instead, it will be heading to AT&T’s 4G LTE network as the Sony Xperia Ion at some point in the future.
The Sony Xperia S packs quite a punch as it features a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor and a spacious a 4.3-inch 720p HD display. It also has a 12MP rear camera and Near-Field Communications support.
An upgrade to Android 4.0 should only stand the improve the device.
Sony has already announced that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming to many of its Xperia phones including the Xperia arc, Xperia Play, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman
No specific roll out dates for those devices have been set however.
