Sony had previously announced that the Xperia Tablet Z would launch in Japan, but gave no date. Now, we know that the tablet will be available on March 22 on Japan’s NTT DoCoMo‘s 4G LTE network. The Japanese carrier will begin taking pre-orders for the slate starting on March 9.
Like the flagship Xperia Z smartphone, the Xperia Tablet Z will have a waterproof and dust-proof design, 1080p HD resolution display, and quad-core processing power with 2 GB of RAM alongside a thin and attractive design. The Xperia Tablet Z will be arriving in black and white hues. Though pricing was not revealed, it is expected to cost around $900 US at launch.
Sony had previously promised a Q2 availability date for the Xperia Tablet Z.
The Xperia Tablet Z is expected to be rolling out globally, though Sony has not announced to which regions yet. The company’s most recent products include, alongside the Xperia Tablet Z, the Xperia Z flagship as well as the Xperia ZL. The Xperia Z and ZL smartphones share similar attributes, though only the Xperia ZL will be compatible with U.S. 4G LTE networks supported by AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA alongside those carriers’ 3G GSM networks. The Xperia ZL does not feature the waterproofing of the Xperia Z, though internally both devices have similar hardware.
Sony also announced that the Tablet Z would be coming to India in May.
No other details are currently available. Given that Sony had announced that it would be focusing on the premium market segment, the Xperia Tablet Z should be expected to be a premium-priced tablet and not a Nexus 7 competitor.
