After a fairly slow start to the year, with Android manufacturers continuing to ride out their devices from last year, the Android market has exploded in the past few weeks with a number of big name, high-end launches that have taken the market by storm. From Sony to HTC to Samsung, there have been several brand new smartphones that have hit shelves in the past few weeks, all of which are set to do battle throughout the course of the year.

With that kind of choice comes tough decisions and consumers are left facing some difficult choices when it comes to picking up a new Android smartphone. Many of them feature high-end hardware combined with powerful software features. Simply put, there are just so many options on the table that it can be hard to narrow down the best Android smartphone options available this month.

As we’ve noted over and over, there are Android smartphones that stand out above the rest and are the ones that smartphone shoppers should absolutely have at the top or near the top of their list when heading out to replace an aging smartphone.

There are plenty of Android smartphones on shelves, but there are five that we think stand out above the rest of the pack. That said, these are the five best Android smartphones for the month of May, 2013.

The Nexus 4 remains one of the top Android smartphones on the market as it not only possesses an extremely cheap price tag both through Google and T-Mobile, but it also combines a stellar hardware with very capable vanilla Android software.

LG's Nexus 4 is a Nexus smartphone which means that it has untouched Android software, offers speedy updates and is easily customizable. Throw in the fact that it has a spacious HD display, quad-core processor and good 8MP camera, and it's an option that all shoppers should be looking at.

The Nexus 4 is now widely available though buyers should be aware that it's not available with LTE data speeds and relies on HSPA+ only.
