The Verizon Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update, which Verizon promised would start rolling out today, is now available to owners of the Verizon Galaxy S3 through the settings of the carrier’s 4G LTE smartphone.
Users of the device tell Gotta Be Mobile that the Jelly Bean is now available through the Verizon Galaxy S3’s settings and it appears that some users have even been able to use the Google Framework Service’s trick that often gets the phone to show a prompt for the update when it doesn’t automatically. It’s unclear if the update is available to everyone but we know that a whole lot of Verizon Galaxy S3 owners have seen the update this morning.
Verizon said that the update would be rolling out in phases starting today but it appears that owners aren’t going to have to wait the usual couple of days before it rolls out to everyone. That’s a nice surprise for Verizon Galaxy S3 owners who were likely planning on waiting a few days for the software to arrive.
For those that may not be seeing the update, here is a trick to try in order to force the update.
1. Go to Settings -> Apps -> All
2. Find Google Services Framework.
3. Tap on Force Stop.
4. Select Clear Data.
5. Head back to the Verizon Galaxy S3’s Settings, go to About, and check for a System Update.
The update is a massive piece of firmware checking in at nearly 400MB in size so Verizon Galaxy S3 owners are going to want to set aside some time for the update to download, install and then reboot the device. Once that occurs, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the update that the Galaxy S3 has been running since the device arrived in July, will be replaced by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
That means that owners will now have access to Google Now, the faster UI, the improved widgets, the expanded Notifications, more Face Unlock options, and a whole lot more. It’s a stark improvement over Android 4.0 which means users will definitely want to take the plunge.
