Nokia Puts Samsung on Notice with Lumia

Nokia and Microsoft will be hosting a joint event coming up on September 5th and it’s looking like they might show off some new Lumia hardware at the event.

A tweet from Nokia’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Chris Weber, first reported by CNET, not only teases new Lumia hardware presumably running Windows Phone 8, but also takes a direct shot at Samsung, the Android manufacturer who will be announcing its latest smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on August 29th.

Weber was short on specifics but it appears that he might be trying to stir the pot a bit ahead of the September 5th Windows Phone 8 event in New York.

It’s unclear if the mention of ‘note’ in his tweet is a shot aimed at the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 or if it was just a figure of speech. Samsung just released the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet today and will be showing off the Galaxy Note 2, its next phablet device, in Berlin, Germany later this month.

Nokia on the other hand will very likely be showing off at least some of its new Windows Phone 8 hardware at the event with more reveals possibly coming later on in the month at Nokia World.

Nokia has taken a shot at Samsung and hopefully, it backs up its talk on September 5th.

Thus far, the front-runner for a reveal appears to be the Nokia Phi, a device that is said to be the company’s latest high-end Windows Phone.

The Nokia Phi is rumored to feature a design similar to the Nokia Lumia 800 but feature a 4.65-inch display. It’s also rumored to include an external SD card slot, NFC, and 4G LTE.

There is also another Windows Phone 8 device supposedly lurking around though this one has a 4.3-inch display and is said to possibly be in the mid-range rather than in the high-end realm.

Windows Phone 8 is expected to launch as soon as September with September 30th currently pegged as a possible launch date wherein Microsoft will announce the important details, like a specific release date.

As for the devices, the Nokia Phi has been rumored to be shipping in October though Windows Phone 8 has previously been said to be launching in November.

Microsoft should clear up those details next month.
