The Note 4 Release vs Note Edge Release: Everything We Know

Published

on

As we push towards October, we’ve started to see both the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release and the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release take shape. With details swirling, here, we compare the two and tell you how the Galaxy Note 4 release date is stacking up with the Galaxy Note Edge release date in the U.S. and elsewhere.

On September 3rd, Samsung took the stage in Berlin, Germany and announced a slew of new products including two brand new Galaxy Notes. The first is dubbed Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and it’s a true successor to last year’s Galaxy Note 3. The other is the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, a high-end Galaxy Note release with a bent display. Both devices will challenge the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus later this year and they’ll also be challenging each other.

The Galaxy Note 4 is a beast. Samsung’s new Galaxy Note comes with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a brand new 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, a brand new S Pen, Android 4.4.4 KitKat software that’s backed by TouchWiz, a new design that comes with both plastic and metal materials, and a whole lot more.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note Edge is no slouch either. It features a 5.6-inch Quad HD resolution, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz, 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame. It also comes with an S Pen stylus and a display unlike any other.

Needless to say, these are two of the fall’s hottest devices and they are two devices that consumers around the world are taking a look at as we head deeper into the year towards Black Friday and the start of the holiday shopping season.

Unlike the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge are still not on shelves. As we’ve learned though, both releases are getting closer.

While these two devices share a lot of specifications, their releases are two totally different stories and here we take a look at how the Galaxy Note 4 release stacks up with the Galaxy Note Edge release.

Galaxy Note 4 Release Date Tomorrow

If you’re at all interested in the Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy Note Edge, you’re probably wondering about how their releases are going to stack up. That’s the exact question that we want to answer here. While we can’t provide every single deal just yet, we can paint a broad picture for consumers in the U.S. and around the world.

Note-4-Design

First things first. The Galaxy Note 4 release date is going to beat the Galaxy Note Edge release date to the punch. Earlier this week, Samsung announced that it moved the Galaxy Note 4 release up from October to a September 26th date in order to compete with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that hit shelves at the tail end of last week.

Of course, this Galaxy Note 4 release doesn’t apply to everyone. Tomorrow, the Galaxy Note 4 release hits South Korea, Samsung’s home base, and a key market for Samsung in its fight against the Apple’s of the world. If you live in Korea, you’ll be able to buy one across major carriers tomorrow. Even if you don’t, we should see some retailers start to sell the international version of the device sometime soon.

Galaxy Note Edge Release Making Progress

Now that doesn’t mean that the Galaxy Note Edge release date isn’t making progress. While it’s still unconfirmed, the Galaxy Note Edge release is making moves behind the scenes. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen several models pass certifications.

Galaxy-Note-Edge-1

Yesterday, a number of different Galaxy Note Edge models were spotted passing through the FCC, and Korea’s RRA, on their way to shelves. These certifications are necessary before a release. What this means is that several models, mostly Korean variants, have inched closer to a release that still isn’t concrete.

Point is, the Galaxy Note Edge is a real device that Samsung plans to get out this year.

Galaxy Note Edge Release Date Pegged for October

Samsung still hasn’t confirmed a specific Galaxy Note Edge release date though a Samsung executive told ZDNet Korea that the company is targeting a late October release date for Korea. This lines up with the RRA filings that we’ve seen and it suggests that the Galaxy Note Edge release date may not be too far behind the Galaxy Note 4 release.

The executive was purposely vague so we still don’t know if Samsung is going to be able to hit that target. Everything likely depends on how the production process works out. At least one analyst believes that Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge yield will be low due to problems manufacturing the device’s unique curved screen.

October vs. Delays

Yesterday, Samsung revealed that it plans to get the Galaxy Note 4 release out in 140 countries by the end of October. That’s an extremely ambitious release but one that the company should be able to hit. What this means is that the Galaxy Note 4 should be on shelves around the world by the end of next month. Most regions will receive it in a few weeks though we could potentially see some stragglers.

While the Galaxy Note Edge release might land in October, there’s no way that we’re going to see a release in 140 countries. In fact, we’re going to see a number of delays, one of which should impact Europe.

UK retailer Clove recently passed along some new Galaxy Note Edge details concerning the device’s upcoming release date in the United Kingdom. The retailer claims that the Galaxy Note Edge will not be available in the United Kingdom right off the bat and that the delay will probably impact other nations in Europe as well.

When the Note Edge launches, there will not be UK stock available. It will not be available in the majority of European countries.

For those customers that are interested in purchasing the Note Edge, we will look to source non-UK stock. This means that, if possible, we will purchase the stock intended for one of the countries where the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is due to launch.

In other words, look for the UK Galaxy Note 4 release date on October 10th to easily beat out the Galaxy Note Edge. Those waiting to compare the two could be waiting for awhile.

Galaxy Note Edge Release Date in 2015

Last week, Samsung unexpectedly revealed some new Galaxy Note Edge release date information for North America. While it did not include Canada in its initial Galaxy Note Edge announcement, the company now says that Galaxy Note Edge release date in Canada will take place in 2015.

Galaxy-Note-Edge-2

The company did not offer any specific date. It did, however, mention that the country would be behind the U.S. Galaxy Note Edge release date. If Canada is getting the Galaxy Note Edge in 2015, it’s safe to assume that other countries will likely not see the Galaxy Note Edge release until 2015.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is poised to hit Canada in October.

Galaxy Note 4 Release Date (U.S.) vs. Galaxy Note Edge Release Date (U.S.)

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date in the United States is confirmed for October 17th. Even with the bump up to September in Korea, that date probably isn’t moving. What this means is that there is a very good chance that the Galaxy Note 4 will arrive before the Galaxy Note Edge in the United States.

We still don’t have any specific information regarding the Galaxy Note Edge release in the U.S. We’re heard “later this year” and “fall” from Samsung and its carriers but nothing more than that. The most telling detail here is the fact that none of the U.S. bound models have been caught passing through the FCC. This needs to happen before the release can happen and before carriers can announce release details.

Galaxy Note 4 Features - Sensors

It’s clear that Samsung and the U.S. should have this device out before the end of the year and if we’re lucky, we could see it emerge ahead of the holidays and Black Friday.

Widespread vs. Limited Availability

A Samsung executive also told ZDNet Korea that the Galaxy Note Edge is going to be a limited release concept, something that hints at limited availability. In other words, while some nations will likely experience delays, others may not get the Galaxy Note Edge at all. That’s something to keep in mind as we push towards the end of the year.

Galaxy Note 4 Pre-Orders vs. Galaxy Note Edge Pre-Orders

Select retailers are taking Galaxy Note Edge pre-orders, Clove UK is one of those retailers, though they’re taking them without any set price tag or release date. Consumers will want to proceed with caution. We expect the Galaxy Note Edge to go up for pre-order once pricing and release dates are nailed down.

Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders are widely available. In the U.S., AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are now taking pre-orders and tomorrow, Sprint will start taking some pre-orders of its own. U.S. Cellular, another Galaxy Note 4 carrier, hasn’t announced any plans for pre-orders.

Thus far, we haven’t seen any sell outs and carriers are acting like they’ll be able to get the flagship out on or around October 17th. Some pre-orders might actually arrive early.

Galaxy Note 4 Carriers vs. Galaxy Note Edge Carriers

Here are the confirmed Galaxy Note 4 carriers in the U.S.:

  • AT&T
  • Sprint
  • T-Mobile
  • U.S. Cellular
  • Verizon

Here are the confirmed Galaxy Note Edge carriers in the U.S.

  • AT&T
  • Sprint
  • T-Mobile
  • Verizon

No smaller carriers and no U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note Edge, at least not yet.

Galaxy Note 4 Price vs. Galaxy Note Edge Price

The Galaxy Note Edge is going to cost more than the Galaxy Note 4, plain and simple.

With the Galaxy Note 4 release date announcements, we finally saw its price confirmed. It’s going to be going for $299.99 on-contract in the United States, same as every Galaxy Note model before it. In other parts of the world, it’s coming with respectable, and expected, pricing that falls in line with previous Galaxy Note releases.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge and its curved screen are both premium and we’re expecting a bigger price tag due to the costs. Early details back up those assumptions.

Note-4-Design-2

Amazon Germany is charging nearly €1000 for the Galaxy Note Edge. Same goes for German retailer Notebooksbilliger.  A Weibo post from an alleged China Mobile employee suggests that the Galaxy Note Edge price could be expensive in China as well. The post indicates that China Mobile could charge 7,000 Yuan for the Galaxy Note Edge. That translates to about $1,139.

At the beginning of the year, Samsung said that the Galaxy Note Edge would be aimed at the high-end and it appears that the company will stick to its word. If you’re thinking about the Galaxy Note Edge, be prepared to pay a steep price.

Places to Buy

While the Galaxy Note Edge may not be the widespread device that people wanted, it’s going to be easy to find in the United States. Best Buy, Target, Sam’s Club, RadioShack, Amazon, Walmart, and Costco will evidently be stocking this high-end Galaxy Note Edge when it arrives. These should all come in addition to carrier stores that should stock the Galaxy Note Edge on day one.

We already know that the Galaxy Note 4 will be easy to find in the United States with similar retailers and carriers planning to stock it on October 17th. While stock could be limited, we should see a number of places sell Samsung’s curved smartphone.
