In 2015 almost every phone released was really big, but that doesn’t mean small screen Android smartphones aren’t available. With the iPhone SE being the perfect small phone, Android users are looking for something similar. That said, buyers still have plenty to choose from when it comes to smaller screens. Below is a list of some excellent small screen Android phones worth buying in 2016 and beyond.
Samsung started it all with the original Galaxy Note, the first “phablet” and now every company offers a huge phone, including Apple. However, not all users want a big screen. Some want a phone that’s small and portable, easy to hold, and doesn’t look massive next to their face.
Lately most devices with a screen 5-inches or smaller doesn’t come with high-end specs or the features most want from a premium device. Either buy a gigantic phone, or compromise in order to get something smaller. Getting a small screen without sacrificing performance and quality is hard to come by, but there are still some rather good options available to buyers.
Buyers looking for a device with the latest cutting edge features, powerful processors and great cameras, will be looking at a device over 5-inches in size and likely $400-$700. It doesn’t have to be that way though, which is why we’ve outlined a few here. The iPhone SE is a unique phone with a small 4-inch screen like old iPhone options, but upgraded internals to match 2016 devices. Android users will be happy to know they have options too.
The Galaxy S7 is nearly 5.2-inches, Google’s Nexus 6P is 5.7-inches, and the most recent Moto X is a whopping 5.7-inch device. Small Android phones are disappearing. That said, HTC, Sony, Samsung, Motorola, and a few others still have phones that are small without sacrificing too much. Or smaller, at least.
We’ve gathered a few premium high-end small screen Android phones, budget devices that aren’t huge, and even one that can last nearly four days. These are all “small” in the world of Android, but none have a tiny 4-inch screen like Apple’s latest device. Some even have a 5-inch screen, because that’s becoming the norm. With that out of the way, below is a list of 5 small screen Android smartphones worth buying. We’ll update throughout 2016 as more phones are released.
Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
The Sony Xperia lineup isn't very popular in the United States, but Sony makes some pretty great smartphones. The best of them all, is the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact announced back in September of 2015. Which was released in February.
Sony released three Xperia Z5 devices. One with a 4k screen, a regular flagship model, and the popular Z5 Compact. It has everything flagship phones have, including a fingerprint scanner, but it's small enough to still use easily with one hand.
The Z5 Compact features a 4.6-inch 720p HD display, a powerful Snapdragon 810 8-core processor with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a micro-SD slot, Android 5.1 Lollipop, a 23 megapixel rear and 5mp front camera setup. There's a fingerprint scanner built into the side of the phone, which doubles as the power button, and the phone is water-resistant. Sounds good right? The US version doesn't have the fingerprint scanner. So keep that in mind if this is a phone on your radar.
It can be found for as low as $349 at Best Buy.
We'd also recommend users consider the Sony Xperia X Compact which was just announced in September (2016) and released in October. It has the same 4.6-inch small screen, but top-teir specs along with 3GB of RAM and a bigger 2,700 mAh battery. That said, the Z5 will be cheaper.
