Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge: 5 Things Buyers Need to Know

Those tasked with deciding between the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or Samsung Galaxy Note Edge are in for a tough decision. While we can’t make that decision for you, we can provide you with details that could help to make you come to a quicker, better decision. This Galaxy Note 4 vs Galaxy Note Edge comparison addresses the most important differences, and similarities, that buyers need to know about ahead of their release.

On September 3rd, Samsung took to the stage in Berlin, Germany to announce several new products for the fall. First, we saw another intro for the Samsung Gear S, an Apple Watch competitor and a device that appears to be a solid alternative to current Android smartwatches. We also saw the Gear VR virtual reality headset make its first appearance.

The stars of the show were, of course, the two new Galaxy Note models that Samsung paraded around the stage during its Unpacked event. The first, the Galaxy Note 4, the true successor to the Galaxy Note 3. The other, the Galaxy Note Edge, a new product that should be aimed at the high-end market in the United States and elsewhere.

The Galaxy Note 4 release date will beat the iPhone 6 plus to many shoppers as iPhone 6 Plus shipments slip to November.

Unsurprisingly, consumers around the world are looking into Samsung’s two latest smartphones and many are trying to decide between the two ahead of their upcoming release dates. For some, the decision will be easy. Others though are going to have a hard time picking through all of the details in an effort to come to a final decision. Those are the people that we want to help.

We can’t tell you what to do but we can push you in the right direction and that’s exactly what we’re aiming to do in this latest comparison. Here, we take a look at the five most important things buyers need to know about the Galaxy Note 4 vs Galaxy Note Edge.

Galaxy Note 4 Specs vs. Galaxy Note Edge Specs

The first thing that buyers need to know is that these devices are almost identical when it comes to key specs. Here, we’re going to run down all of the key components of each device so that you can get a better understanding about how close these two are when it comes to their hardware.

Galaxy Note 4 Specs

  • 5.7-inch Quad HD display
  • Snapdragon 805 processor (U.S.)
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization
  • 3.7MP front-facing camera
  • 32GB storage with support for 128GB microSD cards
  • Android 4.4.4 KitKat
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • UV sensor
  • Heart rate sensor
  • NFC
  • Fast charging
  • 3220 mAh battery
  • S Pen

Galaxy Note Edge Specs

  • 5.6-inch Quad HD display with bent side
  • Snapdragon 805 processor (U.S.)
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization
  • 3.7MP front-facing camera
  • 32GB / 64GB storage with support for 128GB microSD cards
  • Android 4.4.4 KitKat
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • UV sensor
  • Heart rate sensor
  • NFC
  • Fast charging
  • 3000 mah battery
  • S Pen

As you can see, the specs on both of these line up pretty well. They both come with an array of sensors, they both come with high-powered cameras, they both have fast processors with a ton of RAM, and they both have a lot of storage space both on board and thru the microSD card slot. We should also point out that they look at a lot alike minus the displays.

Galaxy Note 4 Display vs. Galaxy Note Edge Display

Maybe the biggest difference between these two devices is the Galaxy Note Edge’s bent display. Instead of a flat Quad HD display like the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy Note Edge comes with a screen that curves down over the edge of the device. Thus the name. The Galaxy Note Edge and its screen can be seen in the video below.

The Galaxy Note Edge screen isn’t going to be for everyone but it does come with some distinct advantages. The bent part of the Galaxy Note Edge’s display not only offers better viewing angles for content, it also provides users with an extremely quick way to access their most used applications, settings and more. All it takes is the swipe of a thumb.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge bent display can also display notifications on the side without pausing or interrupting content that’s running on the main screen. So if you’re watching a movie and you get a text or an email, it will appear on the side as opposed to on the main screen. This is only the beginning as Samsung will deliver a Galaxy Note Edge SDK that will allow developers to take full advantage of the curved display.

It’s also worth noting that the Galaxy Note Edge comes with the same S Pen features and the same multitasking features found on the Galaxy Note 4 including the upgraded Multi-Window View.

Galaxy Note 4 Release Date vs. Galaxy Note Edge Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date is confirmed for October, both globally and in the United States, while the Galaxy Note Edge release date is only confirmed for later this year.

Samsung still hasn’t announce a specific Galaxy Note 4 release date though we’ve seen three possibilities pop up. October 3rd is listed on Amazon while Dutch retailers believe it will arrive in and around October 10th. Clove UK, a retailer in the United Kingdom, believes that the device will arrive the week of October 13th. None of those dates are confirmed though as we’ve pointed out, we’re seeing the Galaxy Note 4 release date make a ton of progress behind the scenes.

We’ve seen some Galaxy Note Edge release date movement but not as much as the Galaxy Note 4. The device has started to pass certifications but we simply haven’t seen the same volume as the Galaxy Note 4 certs. This doesn’t mean that it’s going to be delayed but it could mean that a Galaxy Note Edge release date is not imminent.

Early upgrades come for many waiting on the Galaxy Note 4 release date.

Early upgrades come for many waiting on the Galaxy Note 4 release date.

Yesterday, UK retailer Clove passed along some new Galaxy Note Edge details and they weren’t pretty. The retailer claims that the Galaxy Note Edge will not be available in the United Kingdom right off the bat. It claims that its info comes from distribution channels.

When the Note Edge launches, there will not be UK stock available. It will not be available in the majority of European countries.

For those customers that are interested in purchasing the Note Edge, we will look to source non-UK stock. This means that, if possible, we will purchase the stock intended for one of the countries where the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is due to launch.

So we could see the European market experience delays. Furthermore, when the Galaxy Note Edge does arrive, it might be hard to find.

New Galaxy Note Edge release details from Yonhap News in Korea recently quoted a Hyundai Securities analyst. That analyst believes that Samsung plans to ship 11 million units of the Galaxy Note 4 but that it might only ship 1 million units of the Galaxy Note Edge. The analyst believes that the low yield is due to the manufacturing difficulties that come with the Galaxy Note Edge’s display.

So what does this mean for buyers? It means that the Galaxy Note Edge could be harder to find. It also means that it might be release after the Galaxy Note 4 in some regions around the world. Not too surprising given the Galaxy Note 4’s flagship status but an important thing to absorb nonetheless.

Galaxy Note 4 Carriers vs. Galaxy Note Edge Carriers

The Galaxy Note 4 will come to more carriers in the United States and there’s a chance that other regions around the world could follow in the U.S.’s footsteps.

AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, T-Mobile, and Verizon have all confirmed the Galaxy Note 4 for arrival. And while AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have pledged allegiance to the Galaxy Note Edge, U.S. Cellular hasn’t confirmed the Galaxy Note Edge release.

Neither device is expected to land at smaller regional carriers in the United States and there’s a good chance that U.S. Cellular will pass on Samsung’s new and expensive Galaxy Note in favor of other devices.

Galaxy Note 4 Price vs. Galaxy Note Edge Price

Samsung still hasn’t relayed the Galaxy Note 4 price or the Galaxy Note Edge price but thanks to retailers, we have some idea about what to expect.

It looks like the Galaxy Note 4 will be priced at €699 in Europe. That’s similar to what we saw for the Galaxy Note 3 last year and it’s a sign that the Galaxy Note 4 could command the same $299.99 on-contract price in the U.S. In fact, we’ve discovered evidence that points to that very thing.

Everything we’re seeing from the Galaxy Note Edge price points to a steeper price tag. All along, Samsung said that this would be a device aimed at the high-end and it’s looking like it will be staying true to its word.

Galaxy-Note-Edge-3

Amazon Germany is charging nearly €1000 for the Galaxy Note Edge. Same goes for Dutch retailer Notebooksbilliger. Those prices are early price points but they’re much higher than the prices we’re seeing for the Galaxy Note 4.

Curved screens are an expensive endeavor and when paired with the Galaxy Note 4’s specs, you have a recipe for an extremely expensive Galaxy Note 4. How much? We can’t say but buyers will want to expect to have to pay more.
