Published

on

After months of silence, the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date is finally here giving consumers a chance to get the Galaxy Note 4 alternative on one of the nation’s largest carriers. Now that the elusive beast is out on shelves, we take a look at the five things buyers need to know about the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge and its release.

In September, Samsung took the stage at IFA 2014 to announce a slew of brand new products including a Galaxy Note 4 and a curved version of the Galaxy Note 4 dubbed Galaxy Note Edge. The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is a concept phone that utilizes a bent screen that wraps down around the right side of the device making it a unique, and expensive, alternative to the Galaxy Note 4.

Samsung;s Galaxy Note Edge features Quad HD resolution display, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz (Android 5.0 Lollipop is on the way), 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame. It also comes with an S Pen stylus like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy Note Edge arrived on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile at the tail end of last year though it failed to reach U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless, two of the largest carriers in the United States. Yesterday, after weeks of anticipation, U.S. Cellular released the Galaxy Note Edge.

Today, Verizon followed suite with a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release of its own. The release comes nearly four months after the carrier first confirmed the Galaxy Note Edge for arrival on its 4G LTE network.

With a Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release here, we want to take a look at the five most important things prospective Verizon Galaxy Note Edge buyers need to know about the device and its release date.

Verizon Galaxy Note Edge Price

The Verizon Galaxy Note Edge is here and lo and behold, it’s just as expensive as the other variants that arrived before it. Verizon is going to be charging $399.99 on-contract for the rights to the Galaxy Note Edge, same as AT&T and same as U.S. Cellular. Sprint is charging $450 for the Galaxy Note Edge while T-Mobile does not offer the device on-contract.

Prospective Galaxy Note Edge buyers need to note that this is $100 more expensive than the Galaxy Note 4 on-contract at most places, more than the iPhone 6 Plus, and significantly more than most high-end smartphones including the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. The Galaxy Note Edge commands a premium thanks to its unique set of features and buyers must take extra precaution because of its price point.

Off-Contract Price is Also Expensive

Those looking to buy the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge off-contract are in the same boat. Verizon’s charging $800 off-contract for the rights to the Galaxy Note Edge making the Galaxy Note Edge one of the most expensive off-contract smartphones on its network. The price is comparable to the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note 4 off-contract.

The price though is significantly less than AT&T’s off-contract price point for the Galaxy Note Edge. AT&T is currently charging $945 off-contract for the Galaxy Note Edge.

Limited Colors

As expected the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release comes in just one color: black. It appears that AT&T will be the only U.S. carrier offering the white Galaxy Note Edge. Samsung is known for offering exclusive colors to U.S. carriers though the company made no mention of this exclusive and AT&T has yet to promoted it.

Best Buy Alternative

Buyers that don’t want to buy through Verizon or don’t have a Verizon store nearby for hands-on time can go through Best Buy. The retailer is now stocking the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge through its online store and through its physical retail locations. This is a limited concept phone so buyers will want to call ahead to see how much stock individual stores have before heading down.

It’s worth noting that Best Buy’s off-contract price is actually a little more expensive than Verizon’s. Instead of $800 off-contract, the retailer is selling the device for $850.

Galaxy Note Edge Deals Non-Existent

Verizon Galaxy Note Edge deals are missing on release day though that shouldn’t come as any surprise to those who have waited for the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge to arrive on shelves.

We simply haven’t seen any Galaxy Note Edge deals emerge since it first arrived at the tail end of last year and there’s a good chance that Verizon’s model will stick to its premium price point for the foreseeable future.
