Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S6 release date appears to be inching closer as Galaxy S6 rumors continue to out potential details ahead of Samsung’s upcoming announcement. With that in mind, we want to wade through all of the noise and tell you about the five things you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S6 release date right now.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 release still isn’t confirmed but it’s begun to shape up throughout the month of January. For several weeks now, Samsung Galaxy S6 rumors have emerged from the shadows, outlining everything from the Galaxy S6 specs to the Galaxy S6 launch date to the Galaxy S6 release itself. No stone has been left unturned.

From what we can tell, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is going to be an impressive specimen with a number of high-end features on board. It’s a device that a lot of people are waiting for and for good reason. The Galaxy S series always ranks among the best smartphones every year and Samsung and its partners have high expectations for this years model.

Samsung Galaxy S6 specs are one big piece of the puzzle but so is the Galaxy S6 release date, the date on which Samsung will release its Next Big Thing into the wild. The Galaxy S6 release date remains fairly elusive though thanks to Galaxy S6 rumors, we’re starting to piece together a potential outlook for those in the hunt for a new flagship smartphone.

Today, we want to take a look at what you need to know this week about the Samsung Galaxy S6 release date. This roundup includes the latest Galaxy S6 release details but it also includes some logical predictions on our part. We still don’t have much to work with from a rumor standpoint but we can draw from years and years of Galaxy S releases in an effort to paint a clearer picture for consumers. Here’s what you need to know.

Release as Soon as March?

Samsung’s Galaxy S release window has historically stretched between April and July. The Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4 both arrived in April while the Galaxy S3 was released slowly over the course of three months. April seems to be the sweet spot for the Galaxy S though it’s possible that we could see Samsung push the Galaxy S6 out a little earlier this year.

Song Myung Sup, an analyst from HI Investment & Securities Co in South Korea recently told Bloomberg that “Samsung may release the next Galaxy S as early as March, and it can’t dare to take the risk to use any of the chips in question for its most important model.” For reference, the chips the analyst is referring to are the Qualcomm Snadragon 810 chips that will reportedly skip the Galaxy S6 due to problems in internal testing.

We may also see a Galaxy S6 Edge with a curved screen.

Expect the Galaxy S6 to be a mash up of the Galaxy S5, Note 4 and new features.

This is not the first whisper we’ve heard about an early release than normal and it probably won’t be the last. And while it’s entirely possible that Samsung will look to shift its Galaxy S6 release into March rather than April, it’s difficult to put too much stock in that month at this point. Galaxy S6 release date rumors should firm up soon as the company starts finalizing plans behind the scenes.

Galaxy S6 Launch Date

The Samsung Galaxy S6 launch date is probably when you’ll see the Galaxy S6 release date confirmed and it’s looking like that date will be March 2nd. Reports suggest that Samsung is looking to announce the Galaxy S6 at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona, Spain, the same conference it used to announce the Galaxy S5.

March 2nd, the first day of the trade show, will evidently be the date that Samsung announces the Galaxy S6. This Galaxy S6 launch date makes sense for two reasons:

  • This is exactly what Samsung did last year with the Galaxy S5
  • HTC is announcing its new phone on March 1st

Samsung usually sends out press releases about a month ahead of the event itself so if this date holds, we’ll probably see media invites sent out in the early part of February.

This will be the day that Samsung announces the Galaxy S6 release date and historically, the dates have fallen about a month after the event itself. So if the event date is legit, we will probably see a Galaxy S6 release date fall somewhere between late March and May. Circle those months on the calendar knowing that they could change at any time.

HTC One M9 & LG G4

HTC is confirmed to have a new flagship smartphone on tap for March 1st. The company is widely expected to debut an HTC One M8 successor that’s commonly known as the HTC One M9. That may not be the actual retail name of the phone but it’s what we’re calling it ahead of release to keep things as simple as possible.

Last year, HTC released the HTC One M8 almost immediately after announcing it. If anything, the company will likely get the device out shortly after the event so it looks like the Galaxy S6 release will have some competition. The HTC One M8 was one of the Galaxy S5’s biggest threats last year and we could see a repeat of the same this year as the company’s wrestle for control of the market.

It’s also worth noting that the LG G4, a device that’s expected to replace the LG G3, is not expected to debut in and around MWC 2015. An LG executive told Korean publication The Chosun Ilbo that it “rolled out the G3 in May last year so we do not plan to unveil the G4 at this year’s Mobile World Congress and spend more time perfecting the new phone.”

This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given that LG’s usual launch window comes a little later in the year. We would expect a healthy dose of LG G4 rumors to emerge at MWC 2015 though as a way of drawing attention away from HTC and perhaps Samsung as well.

Galaxy S6 Carriers & Price

Galaxy S6 release rumors include rumored Galaxy S6 carriers. Twice we’ve seen Galaxy S6 model numbers and carriers emerge and both of those leaks aligned with one another.

Most recently Upleaks, a leaker based on China, offered an extensive list of possible Samsung Galaxy S6 model numbers that lined up with the earlier details. The base Galaxy S6 model number is expected to be SM-G920 with changes based on region and based on carrier. Included in the list are several U.S. carriers including top carriers AT&T and Verizon.

  • SM-G920A – AT&T
  • SM-G920P – Sprint
  • SM-G920R – U.S. Cellular
  • SM-G920T – T-Mobile
  • SM-G920V – Verizon

Galaxy S6 rumors center on two models, one with a bent display, and the Galaxy S6 Edge is expected to come to U.S. carriers as well. Here are the model numbers associated with that device:

  • SM-G925A – AT&T
  • SM-G925P – Sprint
  • SM-G925R – U.S. Cellular
  • SM-G925T – T-Mobile
  • SM-G925V – Verizon

The list also includes model numbers for a number of other key Samsung battlegrounds including South Korea, China, and Japan. Listed are KDDI and NTT DoCoMo in Japan and KT and LG in South Korea. The leak also includes variants that are supposedly heading to Brazil and Canada. The original model number leak two months ago suggested that the Galaxy S6 would be heading to Bell in Canada.

One other thing to note. A possible Samsung Galaxy S6 User Agent Profile string has been discovered lurking on Samsung’s website. The UA Profile is for an SM-G920A which has twice been confirmed as the AT&T Galaxy S6 model. AT&T’s Galaxy smartphones typically have an “A” at the end to denote the carrier. The UA Profile doesn’t tell us much about the device’s widespread release but it hints at an arrival on AT&T’s network.

Galaxy S6 Release Date Clearly Getting Close

Finally, it’s worth noting that while we don’t yet have a Galaxy S6 release date, it’s clear that the Galaxy S6 release date is getting close. We know this for a few reasons.

One, credible rumors point to an arrival at MWC. Two, the Samsung Galaxy S6 rumor cycle is picking up speed as we head into February and March. This has happened every year for the last three years and its served as an early sign of an impending release. We’re also nearly the year cycle for Samsung’s Galaxy S release and with Galaxy S4 users coming off contract, an arrival in Q1 makes a ton of sense.

Samsung Galaxy S6 - Exciting Tech 2015

The point is, the release probably isn’t five months away. We’re starting to head down the home stretch and we should see Galaxy S6 release rumors start to firm up and get specific as we push toward March.

It’s also worth noting that if you’ve been thinking about buying a new phone, now is probably the time to start waiting for the Galaxy S6 to arrive. We’re that close.
