This list offers the five most important things you need to know before you install the iPhone 4s iOS 8.2 update on the aging iPhone, that sometimes doesn’t offer much storage for users. Before you download and install iOS 8.2 on the iPhone 4s, you need to understand what the new iOS 8 update delivers and how it impacts the performance of your iPhone 4s.

One week ago Tim Cook announced the Apple Watch and the iOS 8.2 update that will enable support on the iPhone. The iPhone 4s does not work with the Apple Watch, but it does get the iOS 8.2 update that is about much more than putting an Apple Watch app on home screens.

The iOS 8.2 update delivers fixes for over a dozen iPhone problems with Mail, Safari, Maps, Music, Bluetooth and more. If you are sick of iOS 8 problems, this is a tempting update to install on the iPhone 4s.

Here's how iOS 8.2 performs on the iPhone 4s.

Here’s how iOS 8.2 performs on the iPhone 4s.

Here is a quick look at the five most important things you need to know about the iPhone 4s iOS 8.2 update a week after the iOS 8.2 release date.

iPhone 4s iOS 8.2 Performance

The iPhone 4s iOS 8.2 performance reports from regular users range from marked improvement to a bit of lag. This is common with any update. The apps, services and ways we use our iPhone can alter the overall experience after an update. It’s also important to note that sometimes we experience lag right after the update that foes away.

The better way to get an idea of the iOS 8.2 performance on the iPhone 4s is to watch a comparison video like the one below. This short video walks through a variety of common tasks and apps on the iPhone 4s running iOS 8.2 next to one running iOS 8.1.3. Throughout the video, the iPhone 4s with iOS 8.2 runs slightly faster.

If you upgrade from iOS 8.1.3 to iOS 8.2 and you don’t like the performance, you can still downgrade from iOS 8.2 to iOS 8.1.3 for a week or so.

iOS 8.2 Problems & Fixes

After a week there is a welcoming lack of major iOS 8.2 problems, but there still are some reports of issues with iMessage turning off on the iPhone 4s after installing the update and there are a variety of other complaints from iOS 8.2 users on the Apple Support Forums.

There are also scattered reports of bad iOS 8.2 iPhone 4s battery life from owners who say their device quickly ran through a full battery. If this happens it is a good idea to use our guide on how to fix bad iOS 8.2 battery life.

It is not likely that you will experience every issue on your iPhone 4s, but if you do run into any iOS 8.2 problems, you can read our common iOS 8.2 problems and fixes round-up for the latest ways to fix the most common issues and bugs that surface after the upgrade.

In addition to an overall good performance report from users and in the iOS 8.2 iPhone 4s performance video above, there are a dozen important bug fixes for iPhone owners in the iOS 8.2 update. You can read what’s new in iOS 8.2 for a full list of the fixes, but the most important ones for the average iPhone 4s owner are listed below.

  1. Increases stability of Mail
  2. Improves stability of Flyover in Maps
  3. Improves stability of Music
  4. Improves VoiceOver reliability
  5. Improves connectivity with Made for iPhone Hearing Aids
  6. Fixes an issue in Maps that prevented navigating to some favorite locations
  7. Addresses an issue where the last word in a quick reply message wasn’t autocorrected
  8. Resolves an issue where some music or playlists didn’t sync from iTunes to the Music app
  9. Fixes an issue where deleted audiobooks sometimes remained on device
  10. Resolves an issue that could prevent call audio from routing to car speakers while using Siri Eyes Free
  11. Fixes a Bluetooth calling issue where no audio is heard until the call is answered
  12. Resolves an issue that prevented some Calendar events from automatically showing as ‘Busy’ after accepting an invite

Installing the iOS 8.2 update delivers these fixes to your iPhone as part of the upgrade. If you use the iPhone for Mail, Maps or Music and you use Bluetooth connections in a car this is an essential upgrade.

No iOS 8.2 Jailbreak

There is no iOS 8.2 jailbreak now, so if you are on iOS 8.1.2 or lower and enjoy your iOS 8 jailbreak tweaks and iOS 8 themes you should stay there. We are starting to hear promising news about an iOS 8.2 jailbreak release in March, but there are no specific plans yet.

iOS 8.2 jailbreak

We are still waiting for an iOS 8.2 jailbreak release date.

While you can downgrade from iOS 8.2 to iOS 8.1.3, there is no iOS 8.1.3 jailbreak either so once you upgrade past iOS 8.1.2 you are stuck without a jailbreak until one arrives.

Can Go Straight to the iOS 8.3 Beta

For users who want to try the latest and greatest there is an option to go straight to the iOS 8.3 beta. Apple started accepting users into a public iOS 8.3 beta that allows the user to test the latest iOS 8 software before a public release date.

You can follow this guide to sign up for the program and once accepted how to install iOS 8.3 today. Of course there are many reasons you don’t want to install the iOS 8.3 beta, with the most important being that this is your only iPhone. Make sure you understand what you are getting in to before you try the iOS 8.3 beta.

It is possible to downgrade from the iOS 8.3 beta to iOS 8.2, but it is a hassle that some users may not wish to get involved with.
