Rooted Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners who wish to take advantage of the Android 4.2 camera, Photo Sphere feature included, can now do so thanks to an APK file that leaked out today.
Android Central unearthed an APK file that rooted Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners, that means Verizon Galaxy Nexus and Sprint Galaxy Nexus as well, can use to snag the official Android 4.2 camera software that will be arriving with the new version of Android 4.2 sometime in the future. And just by following a few instructions, Galaxy Nexus owners can get the new camera up and rolling in no time.
One of the biggest additions coming with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is something called Photo Sphere which allows users to take 360 degree Street View-like photos using their camera. The functionality looks fantastic and will especially appeal to those that love to take photos while traveling as it will allow viewers to completely immerse themselves in the photo.
That being said, it’s fortunate that this feature is available right now as Android 4.2 still hasn’t been announced for the Galaxy Nexus. It will start with the Nexus 10 and Nexus 4, both of which launch in November, and will presumably make its way to other Nexus devices soon after that.
For those that are using a rooted Galaxy Nexus with custom recovery, here is how to get the Android 4.2 camera with Photo Sphere up and running right now.
First, download the APK file. It can be found at 4.2Camera.zip or at this mirror. Owners will want to place that zip onto the root of the phone’s storage space. Next, reboot into Recovery mode. At this point, it may be smart to make a back up, just in case something goes wrong. Then, flash the zip file that was just downloaded. When that is finished installing, a simple reboot will bring the Android 4.2 camera to the Galaxy Nexus.
This should be an easy process for those that have installed APK files before but those that are novice, may just want to wait until the official Android 4.2 ROM arrives, something that could be just over the horizon.
