If you want to know what is happening today you can ask Alexa for the news. 

Say "Alexa, What's the News?" and you'll get the latest news read to you by various sources. 

Right out of the box Alexa taps into NPR Hourly news and the forecast, but you can go to Settings on the Alexa app and then to Flash Briefing to update your sources. 

Tap on Get More Flash Content and search for your preferred sources. This includes access to the AP, CNN, CNBC, Reuters, Fox News, the WSJ, the BBC, the Washington Post and many other services.
