You need a skin or a case to make sure you don’t ruin the Surface Laptop’s design. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon can take a beating without accessories.

The X1 Carbon has a magnesium body and water-resistant design. Lenovo says that the laptop met 12 military-grade durability requirements and passed 200 durability tests. Despite its durable exterior, the X1 Carbon weighs 2.49 pounds. That’s lighter than the Surface Laptop.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon models start at $1,322. Buyers choose between a 14-inch FHD 1920 x 1080p display and a 14-inch WQHD IPS 2560 x 1440 display for sharper visuals. All models use the latest Intel Core processors and buyers can add up to 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM to the system. Each X1 Carbon can last for 15 hours before it needs a charge.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon buyers get more ways to connect accessories than Surface Laptop buyers get. An NFC chip lets users pair a Bluetooth speaker with it quickly. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a MicroSD card slot and 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports built into its body. The laptop’s WiGig technology lets it communicate with a dock wirelessly. ThinkPad X1 Carbon owners can browse the internet without Wi-Fi. Surface Laptop users can't do that.
