LG G6 vs iPhone 7 Plus Camera Comparison Delivers Surprising Results

Published

on

The LG G6 and the iPhone 7 Plus offer two of the best smartphone cameras on the market. Both phones offer a dual camera design that delivers more options than you are used to on older phones. With two cameras you can zoom in closer, take wider photos and open up more creative options.

The iPhone 7 Plus is available now and the LG G6 is coming in April, but we have an early look unit in our hands that we’ve been using for the last week.

LG delivers a phone that is more than just cameras, with an impressive 18:9 screen with rounded corners in an impressively small body that is easy to use with one hand.

Apple includes two 12MP cameras on the back of the iPhone 7 Plus and one 7MP camera on the front. The LG G6 includes two 13MP cameras on the back and a 5MP camera on the front.

In typical Apple fashion, the iPhone 7 Plus camera app is very minimalistic. You can choose from a variety of modes including Square and a very impressive Portrait mode that blurs the background of your subject. There are other options including Panorama and multiple video options but your controls are fairly limited.

The LG G6 camera app offers a wide range of options. There is no portrait mode, but the rear camera can capture a much wider field of view so it’s possible to take in a wide expanse or add more to your scene. There are a number of modes including panorama and a 360 panorama. Like Apple, there are slow motion and time lapse video modes.

With the LG G6, you can choose to enter manual camera modes for photos and for videos that allows you to control the white balance, focus mode, ISO, shutter speed and other options for greater control.

LG also includes a square camera mode that allows you to see a square photo, for Instagram, while you take the photo. When you press the shutter you see the photo you took on the bottom of the screen and your viewfinder is still at the top so you can take another photo right away. The iPhone Square option doesn’t show you the photo you took in this same way.

The front facing camera on the LG G6 also offers a range of options. You can choose a wide angle shot to include more people or a narrower option to put the focus on you. Both the LG G6 and iPhone 7 Plus include a selfie flash option. The iPhone 7 Plus screen flashes brightly when you press the shutter, while the LG G6 screen includes a light box around the edges so you can see what you will look like. The LG G6 also includes some photo enhancement options to make your skin look better and filters that change the tone of the photo.

While both phones use a dual camera system, the uses are different. Apple designed the phone with a focus on zooming in, giving users a 2X optical zoom. LG focused on delivering a wider view, which allows you to get more in the picture. Haveing used both, the LG G6 camera and the iPhone 7 Plus camera there is a time and place for both a zoom and a wide field of view. I’ve definitely used the iPhone 7 Plus 2x zoom significantly over the last six months, but when walking around the city I definitely love the wide angle that the LG G6 delivers without the need for any external lenses or accessories.

The iPhone 7 Plus is an amazing phone and it’s still a daily carry device, but the LG G6 camera outshines Apple’s flagship.

Amazing Display

Amazing Display

The LG G6 display is absolutely beautiful. The display uses an 18:9 ratio to deliver more usable space in a smaller package and LG chose round corners to make the screen less likely to break when you drop it.

That's not all. The display supports DolbyVision HDR, which means you'll see amazing colors and incredible detail when you stream supported shows and movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

LG packs in a 5.61-inch display that the company says is closer to a 5.7-inch display due to the rounded corners. The screen supports QHD+ resolution and looks stunning.

The LG G6 is a cinema worthy display that fits in your pocket. This display puts your TV to shame.
