LG G7 vs Galaxy S9+: Camera(s)

Cameras, AI CAM, Wide-angle, f/1.6 aperture, telephoto, etc. Cameras are starting to get confusing on smartphones. Just know that both of these phones have amazing cameras on the back that are capable of some pretty special photos.

LG's new G7 has two 16MP cameras on the back. And for the first time, both of them are the same, so you don't have to worry about image quality when you switch from the regular camera to the wide-angle lens. That's LG's differentiating factor here, too. The LG G7 has a wide-angle lens so you can fit more into your photos.

For one, the main 16MP camera has a fast f/1.6 aperture that captures lots of light, a fast auto-focus, and will get crisp and sharp photos. They also added some neat new AI controls and filters that automatically change camera settings for you on the fly. That way the G7 camera will recognize your subject, then change things and offer filters on top of those changes for the best possible photo experience. Until we try it more this is a toss-up, but so far the idea is very promising.

On the Galaxy S9+ you have two rear cameras too. Both of these are only 12MP, but they're Samsung's tried and tested "Dual Pixel" sensors that take amazing photos. Samsung uses a large sensor that captures more light, and more light quickly. And while you'll get great photos anywhere, it really shines in low-light situations like indoors or at night.

Then, Samsung's key change this year is a sensor that manually changes. The camera goes from f/2.4 to f/1.5 automatically. This is a variable aperture camera, a first for a smartphone. That second lens also zooms in close on subjects and takes portrait mode photography.

Both manufacturers use the second camera for different things. So choose whether you want wide-angle photos, or a zoom lens.
