Latest LG V40 News (September 2018)
Before we get started, this section will always show the latest news and rumors to give you the highlights.
A new report from ETNews in Korea just shed some important light on the V40 release date. They claim the phone won’t be available until late October around the globe. Meaning the wait is a little longer than most fans or potential buyers expected.
According to its sources, the V40 will have five cameras, bezels smaller than almost every phone out and deliver a 90% screen-to-body ratio, and get announced in September. Apparently, LG will use a 13, 16, and 20MP tri-camera setup on the back. They claim the phone will launch in South Korea around October 5th, with international markets like the US seeing it on October 18th. Furthermore, this late release is by design. LG chose a month after Samsung’s Note 9 so the competition can cool off by the time its phone arrives.
And now, new images from Mysmartprice show the LG V40’s triple cameras, notched display, and suggest a November launch.
LG V40 Release Date
So when will this phone arrive? The popular leakster @evleaks on Twitter said it’s coming around late summer or early fall. That lines up with the September 21st release date for the LG V30 last year. However, other reports suggest October and even November, making it later than any other V-series release.
What we do know though, is the LG V40 announcement event is set for October 3rd. The company formally announced a launch party on the 3rd in New York City. However, we don’t know when it’ll hit shelves following that event. In previous years the phones take over a month to arrive following these events.
The image above is the first official leak of the LG V40. If accurate, the phone has three rear cameras, two on the front, a notch in the screen, and a super late release date of November 16th.
However, a recent report from ETNews right from Korea said October 5th. They seem pretty confident in that report, too. According to its sources, LG is already working with carrier and telecom companies to deploy the new phone on October 5th in South Korea, followed by a global release on October 18th. Now that we know about the 3rd launch event, an October 18th release is actually pretty feasible.
LG V40 Design & Display
Here’s where things get exciting. The LG V30 last year had a big edge-to-edge display, small bezels, and looked great. Adding a notch to the screen on the LG G7 was a step backward in my opinion. And while the ETNews report claims LG found a way around the notch, new photos suggest just the opposite.
ETNews claims the LG V40 will have a 90% screen-to-body ratio and extremely small bezels on the front. Going as far as to say LG will have a “different from the conventional” way of keeping the bezels small. My interpretation of that is they’ll ditch the iPhone X style notch, shrink the bezels, and use some new technology to keep all the features users love. The photo above just shows a typical notch with software hiding it. So nothing special.
Screen aside, the LG V40 will likely look extremely similar to the LG V30 from 2017. We’re expecting a premium all metal and glass design, IP68 dust and water-resistance, wireless charging, and a glass-back. It’s still too early to ditch the fingerprint scanner, so look out for a fingerprint sensor on the back under those new triple cameras.
Next, the LG V40 will use LG’s latest AMOLED display technology. They’re a little behind Samsung in that department, but earlier this year they confirmed only the V-series will get OLED tech. Basically, expect the best of the best from team LG in the LG V40.
What we don’t know is how big that screen will actually be. My guess is around 6-inches like past models, but with a bigger iPhone, Galaxy Note 9, Pixel 3 XL, and a bigger Galaxy S10 coming in early 2019, they might want to offer a bigger screen. We could see something between 6 and 6.4-inches, but we’ll have to wait and see. If they managed to really shrink the bezels, it makes sense to go for a 6.2 or 6.3-inch screen like most of the Android competition.
LG V40 Specs & Features
The V-series is LG’s best and most expensive smartphone. Lately, the LG G phones are a great package with a few compromises, while the V is LG’s “flagship” device. What that means is you can expect all the latest bells and whistles in the V40.
LG V40 Specs (Rumored)
- 6-inch Quad-HD OLED Display (or bigger)
- Snapdragon 845 Processor with 6-8GB of RAM
- 64/128GB of storage with microSD expansion
- Android 8.1 Oreo or Android 9 Pie
- Triple Cameras: 16MP main, 13MP+20MP telephoto and ultra-wide lenses
- Dual Front-Facing 8MP Cameras with 3D Face Scanning, etc
- Stereo Sound (Possibly by B&O)
- unknown but likely 3,300 mAh or more (like previous phones)
- IP68 Dust & Water-resistance
- USB Type-C, Google Assistant button
- Quad-DAC, 32-bit sound, 3.5mm headphone jack, wireless charging
- and more
As expected, the LG V40 will be one powerful and capable smartphone. Delivering high-end specs across the board that can compete with anything from Samsung, Google, Apple and other Android competitors.
We don’t have too much information yet, but LG typically releases small bits of the puzzle as the release nears. So, expect to hear about its new OLED screen technology in the coming months which will reveal the screen size, followed by some other announcements that leave us clues. We do worry about battery life though. It feels like LG’s has used the same 3,300 mAh battery in phones for years on end. All while screens get bigger and everything else is more powerful.
If LG uses a bigger screen than the 6-inch OLED from last LG V phones, expect at least a 3,600 mAh battery under the hood. That said, we’ll add any new rumors to this post as they arrive.
LG V40 Cameras (All five of them)
Earlier this year Huawei released a phone with three cameras on the back. It’s extremely impressive, and we’re expecting others to follow suit. Recent rumors claim LG will have five cameras on the LG V40. Not three or four, but five. We’re hearing something similar about Samsung’s bigger Galaxy S10+ coming in 2019.
For years LG has offered dual cameras on its smartphones. One is a capable main camera, usually 16MP, while the second one is a wide-angle lens for landscape photography and wide shots. When most other manufacturers like Apple and Samsung added a telephoto lens, they stuck to the wide-lens approach. The V30 had two 16MP cameras on the back.
In 2018 with the LG V40, the company could add five cameras to the phone. On the rear rumors suggest a 16MP main camera, a telephoto zoom lens, and an ultra-wide angle lens. Those last two are 13 and 20MP.
Additionally, LG will use two 8MP cameras on the front for improved photography, selfies, portrait mode photos and security with a new 3D facial scanning technology. Basically, this phone will have five cameras that are all pretty powerful. Imagine if we could take 49MP photos with all three rear cameras.
LG V40 Price & Final Details
In closing, we want to talk about a potential LG V40 price and any other information that emerges over the coming weeks and months. We have a pretty good idea of when it’s coming, and we know about how much it’ll cost too.
We don’t have any leaks or information to go on aside from previous releases. The LG V20 cost $830, the V30 was $800, and the newer V35 is $900. Again, we don’t know what the company will charge but it’s safe to assume the LG V40 will cost around $900-949 when it arrives later this year.
When you factor in the huge screen, small bezels, five cameras, Quad-DAC and everything else, we wouldn’t be surprised if this phone was closer to $999 like the Galaxy Note 9. That said, LG often undercuts the competition, so we’re hopeful for a $899 price point.
Now that Samsung released the Galaxy Note 9 and Pixel 3 XL leaks continue to emerge, we’re expecting more LG V40 information to surface any day now. As it does, we’ll share all the details so stay tuned.
