The Lutron Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer is a physical light switch for Hue lights that attaches to your current light switch solving two major problems many people have with Hue lights. This new switch prevents someone from turning off the Hue lights at the switch and lets you turn your hue lights on and off with a physical switch.
This is part of the Friends of Hue program, allowing you to control any Hue lights with the convenience of a normal switch so that friends, family members and house guests can control a light even without an app or voice controls. It also integrates better into the home than the traditional Hue Dimmer Switch.
You can use the Lutron Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer with a three way light, but you will need to install one at each switch.
The Lutron Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer is $39.95 and it installs into the existing toggle switch in minutes with no need to connect to power or do any kind of advanced installation. Pairing takes about 10 seconds and you can then use the switch, an app or voice control. It should fit on most toggle switches, it is not designed to work with paddle switches.
Once installed, the Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer connects over Zigbee, so you can use it even when your WiFi is down. The dimmer includes a battery to power the connection that should last three years. After that you can replace it with a standard CR2032 battery.
The switch will dim or turn off the Hue White, Hue White Ambience and Hue Color Ambience bulbs. Each switch can control up to 50 bulbs with the Hue Smart Bridge or 12 Zigbee smart bulbs directly. The switch is compatible with Hue lights and other Zigbee 3.0 certified smart bulbs.
I had the chance to see the Aurora in action earlier this year and am impressed with how easy it is to install and use. This solves the biggest problem with Hue lights in my house and in many houses, since it is easy for someone to turn off the power to the lights and then you lose all control. Aurora solves this problem and adds functionality.
Currently the Aurora is available in white, but Lutron is listening to customer feedback about other color options.
The Lutron Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer is available to order at MeetHue and will ship in June. The smart dimmer will be available at Amazon, Apple, Best Buy and Home Depot soon.
