Motorola Droid 4 Ice Cream Sandwich Update Starts to Roll Out

The Motorola Droid 4 Ice Cream Sandwich has started to roll out.

Verizon has announced that the update is now officially rolling out to customers though the carrier says that it will be rolling out in phases. That means that it could be several days before some Motorola Droid 4 owners receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Owners will want to head into the device settings in an attempt to pull the update.

In fact, if the roll out is similar to those of the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX ICS updates, it could be a week or more before some Droid 4 owners are graced with Ice Cream Sandwich after an extremely long wait.

The Droid 4 ICS update has started to roll out.

Verizon has also, again, confirmed that in addition to the features coming with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the update will make the phone global ready.

This means that the device will now work on hundreds GSM networks around the globe, a feature that Verizon promised for the device long ago and a welcomed feature to be sure.

Earlier today, it became clear that the soak test for the Droid 4 ICS update was rolling out. Verizon also posted the official changelog for the Droid 4 Ice Cream Sandwich update detailing what owners should expect from the massive 300MB update.

Face Unlock, a new user interface, an improved Browser, a new Gmail app, a new Recent Apps feature, and more will be coming along with Ice Cream Sandwich.

There are also numerous bug fixes and enhancements that will be arriving as well. Those should help to make the Droid 4 more stable.

The Motorola Droid 4 update was promised for Q3 and fortunately Verizon and Motorola were able to deliver on that promise. Sadly, the Droid Bionic still waits for its Ice Cream Sandwich release though we’ve heard that the device could be getting the update as soon as this week.

I like some of the new features. However, the older version used to guess words really well when texting and emailing. This one is really lacking.

Worst update ever. Nothing is user friendly and who likes white & blue text on black background?? Cannot edit pics much, use phone contacts and even browser windows fail to open quickly. Ready to ditch my new Droid4!

I agree with Andy. This update is horrible. My text messaging app has not worked right since the update. The volume for that app is next to nothing now and I rely heavily on that app to know when my husband is off work. I wish I would have never updated my phone. Never thought I would ever say this but I would now rather have an iPhone just to get rid of this update.

Yeah, BAD update. I don’t like it at all. Gmail interface is especially poor, as subject lines are now shrunk.

Horrible upgrade for the business user. DO NOT ACCEPT THE UPGRADE! The phone unlock feature is now unacceptable. My slide bar is gone, replaced by a throbbing circle with a key in the middle of it. When you press the small circle, another, larger circle appears with four icons, one being a small unlock button. If you press that button (quickly or it will dissappear) you get the home screen. Way too many touches to get to the screen and the buttons are way too small. Was this upgrade designed by a 15 year old boy in Asia with small fingers and no idea of what a phone user who actually makes calls needs? My contacts are all messed up, too, and I don’t know how to get a list of calls received. Makes me long for a flip phone!

I agree with all the negative comments. What’s the fix?

I am so disappointed with this recent update. My DROID 4 constantly locks up with the screen waiting for it to respond and then has an error screen to wait or cancel the app your going into. I wish I never installed this. The phone is very slow and utterly frustrating when you want to open something and it either takes forever or freezes up on you. I am ready to ditch the POS!

The ICS is horrible, just ordered a IPhone 5 as a result of this. Verizon admitted Motorola phones and the ICS do not function properly and they have no idea when a solution will be released. My work email, based on our ms exchange server had too many issues to list. Run from the ICS as fast as you can!
