OnePlus 5 vs Galaxy S8: Specs

Believe it or not, the Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5 are almost identical under the hood. They both have the latest cutting edge processor, tons of storage, and great cameras. The OnePlus 5 even has dual rear cameras, something Samsung's Galaxy S8 doesn't offer. It's impressive that OnePlus can match Samsung in specifications, yet only ask $479 for the phone.

For those wondering how these two compare on paper, here's the full breakdown.

OnePlus 5 Specs

  • 5.5-inch 1080p HD AMOLED Display
  • Snapdragon 835 Processor (same as Galaxy S8)
  • 6GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage, or 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage
  • No micro-SD card slot
  • Android Nougat with Oxygen OS
  • Dual Rear Cameras – 20 Megapixel f/2.6 camera and secondary 16 Megapixel f/1.7 aperture lens
  • 16 Megapixel front camera
  • Front-facing ceramic fingerprint scanner
  • 3,300 mAh battery with Faster Dash Charging (0-92% in one hour)
  • USB Type-C Port, headphone jack, mute slider button
  • Bottom Firing Speakers, more

The OnePlus 5 has it all. The only thing missing here is water-resistance, and it doesn't have a microSD slot to expand storage.

Galaxy S8 Specs

  • 5.8-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD Curved Infinity AMOLED Display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos Processor
  • 4GB of RAM & 64GB of internal storage (Micro-SD slot included)
  • Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Samsung TouchWiz
  • 12 Dualpixel Rear Camera - OIS, phase detection auto-focus, f/1.7 aperture
  • 8 megapixel front camera with auto focus
  • Fingerprint and Iris Scanners
  • IP68 dust & water resistance
  • 3,000 mAh battery with wireless charging
  • Always-On Display
  • Samsung Pay
  • USB Type-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bixby AI, more

As you can see these two phones are actually very similar. Samsung's Galaxy S8 has a slightly bigger screen, water resistance, wireless charging, and an Iris Eye scanner.

However, the OnePlus 5 matches everything else while offering a bigger battery and faster charging. At the same time, the OP5 has 6GB of RAM, or double the RAM for improved performance if you choose the 8GB option with 128GB of storage.

It's a hard choice, but another thing to help could be the software. Samsung covers Android in a skin and fills it with bloatware. While OnePlus uses nearly stock Android with small improvements, instead of changing it completely. If you've enjoyed Samsung devices in the past, you'll love the latest Galaxy S8 software.

The OnePlus 5 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is still over $200 cheaper than the Galaxy S8. We'll let you decide if the differences above are worth the price.
