Sea of Thieves is an online multiplayer game. You can’t play it without a high-speed internet connection. Game files are stored on your system but the title must reach out to Microsoft’s servers to connect you with other players. The PC and console version of the game works this way.

If you play on Xbox One, you also need Xbox Live Gold. That’s because Xbox One doesn’t allow you to play with other gamers without a subscription, despite offering free multiplayer on Windows PCs. Xbox Live Gold costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Luckily, new Xbox One console bundles come with a two week trial of the service.
