Should I wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 or buy the Nintendo Switch now? This is a question I am hearing more and more as rumors of a 2019 Nintendo Switch release heat up and a Switch Mini or Switch S style upgrade pick up steam. This is compounded by the epic Nintendo Switch Black Friday 2018 deals that make this a great time to buy.

For most gamers it is too early to start waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2. While there is a 2019 Nintendo Switch Mini rumored, you can expect to wait much longer for a full on Nintendo Switch 2 release date.

I’ll walk you through what you need to know about waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2, and why it may make sense to buy the Nintendo Switch now instead of sitting on your hands and waiting.

Should you wait for the Nintendo Switch 2?

While there are some good reasons to wait, there are plenty of reasons to buy the current Switch console. You can easily get suckered into waiting for the next big thing over and over again, and sometimes it makes sense to wait, but for most gamers it’s not to that point yet.

Here are the reasons to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2;

  • Wait for New Nintendo Switch 2 Features
  • Wait for a 2019 Nintendo Switch Refresh
  • Wait If You Already Do a Lot of iPad Gaming

And here are the reasons not to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2;

  • Don’t Wait for a Full on Nintendo Switch Upgrade in 2019
  • Don’t Wait If You Find a Great Deal
  • Don’t Wait for Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive Games Yet

We are hearing rumors of a 2019 Nintendo Switch release, but it may not be a full on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 Rumors

Nintendo did not announce a Nintendo Switch 2 at E3 2018 in June, and holiday shopping season is in full swing, so you won’t see a Nintendo Switch 2 this year.

The Nintendo Switch is just about two years old, so you won’t likely see a major upgrade to the Nintendo Switch in 2019, especially early in the year.

That doesn’t mean there is no 2019 Nintendo Switch update coming. Rumors from back in 2017 indicate that Nintendo is working on a smaller Nintendo Switch mini that is easier to handle for smaller kids. The report on Bloomberg focuses in on information from Citigroup analysts that expect to see a new version in 2019.

This makes sense considering most consoles see a Slim or S style upgrade around the third year. This won’t likely be called a Nintendo Switch 2, but could be a Switch Mini or something similar.

If Nintendo delivers a Switch Mini or a 2019 Nintendo Switch as some of the rumors suggest, expect to see it closer to the holiday season in 2019. That’s a lengthy wait if you don’t have a gaming system or a portable gaming solution.

Since deleted Tweets pointed to a Nintendo Switch 2 with 4K support, 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, which would be in line with a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X upgrade, but that still feels like an update that is a ways out. It’s impossible to tell if the Tweets were deleted due to pressure or because they were wrong.

At this stage we don’t have any Nintendo Switch 2 price details. If Nintendo goes with a Switch Mini, we could see a smaller price tag, and likely a different set of features and specs.

With this in mind, this is what you should wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 and why you should go ahead and buy a Nintendo Switch in 2018.

Wait for New Nintendo Switch 2 Features

Wait for New Nintendo Switch 2 Features

One of the biggest reasons to wait is for new Nintendo Switch 2 features and upgrades. If you are looking at a Switch Mini, the upgrades will likely by design wise and could be a smaller overall unit, potentially with a smaller screen. If you are interested in this model, you can expect a focus on portability and home gaming, not on massively upgraded specs and new features.

Gamers looking for a full on Nintendo Switch 2 update may need to wait longer, but you will likely get bigger upgrades. The rumored features include more power, more RAM and 4K gaming. These are all standard features on the top of the line PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, but still not standard gaming features on the entry level models from Nintendo’s competition.

We don’t know if the Nintendo Switch 2 screen size will get a boost to add more real estate when mobile, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the resolution bumped up to 1080P on mobile and then support 4K gaming when docked.

If you are hoping for a major upgrade, you may need to wait longer, but it is one of the biggest reasons to wait.
