Samsung Galaxy Lollipop Release Date Timeline

Published

on

Samsung Galaxy Android 5.0 Lollipop release date details continue to swirl as we head into the new year. With details swirling, we want to breakdown the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, and Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop release dates.

In November, Google finally started pushing out its Android 5.0 Lollipop update, a massive update that delivers huge changes to the Android operating system. At the time, many of its Android partners confirmed Android 5.0 Lollipop release details. Samsung, however, chose to remain silent in the hours and days after the initial release.

Since then, we’ve seen Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update details emerge. We’ve seen Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update information surface. We’ve seen info arrive for the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note Edge. And we’ve seen the Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update start to push out for select users. Samsung’s been busy and it doesn’t appear to be interested in changing that pace.

Over the past two weeks or so, a number of new Samsung Galaxy Lollipop update details have emerged as the company continues to test software for its stable of Galaxy smartphones and tablets. These details include information about vague, and specific, Samsung Galaxy Lollipop release dates for some users. These release dates have helped us put together a detailed timeline of what we know so far about Samsung’s plans.

Samsung continues to keep much of the Galaxy Lollipop release information shrouded in mystery though thanks to the company, and select carriers, we have an idea about when the update will land for some Galaxy-branded devices. Here, we roundup all of that information in one place and deliver an early Samsung Galaxy Lollipop release date timeline for Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note Edge users.

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is not only confirmed, its already available in some regions. The update, which delivers numerous changes to Samsung’s current Galaxy S flagship, has already rolled out to users in Poland and in South Korea. Users there have been treated to an Android 5.0 Lollipop update becoming the first Galaxy S5 users to rock Samsung’s new software.

South Korea

With Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop update underway, owners of other Galaxy S5 variants are curious about when they might receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Thus far, Samsung’s only confirmed one other Galaxy S5 Lollipop update.

The company says that it will be pushing out the Galaxy S5 LTE-A Lollipop update in early 2015 and thanks to leaks, we know that it will be Android 5.0.1 Lollipop and not Android 5.0 Lollipop. Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is a bug fix update that tackles some of the initial problems that emerged on board Google’s software.

A specific date is not known though the Galaxy S5 LTE-A is a device that’s limited to South Korea so those in the international community need not pay attention.

United States

The Sprint Galaxy S5 Lollipop release date continues to inch closer though we still do not have any kind of a read on the specific date.

Many weeks ago, we told you that Sprint was planning a Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop release. We were able to confirm this thanks to a User Agent Profile string that showed the update in testing. That UA Prof has since disappeared for unknown reasons but the damage was done. We know a Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 update is on its way.

It helps that a test build for the Sprint Galaxy S5 leaked out, allowing those with the ability to manually install official software the ability to get an early version on board the Galaxy S5 ahead of the public release. The arrival of this leaked update is a sign that Sprint is making progress behind the scenes. The update isn’t perfect but it’s stable enough to use ahead of the public release.

France

European and Australian carriers are very communicative with their customers when it comes to Android updates and so it did not come as too much of a surprise when French carrier SFR told its users to expect a Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update in December.

The carrier did not outline a specific date only that the update was, and perhaps still is, on target for a release sometime this month. With the month winding down and no update in sight, it’s possible that SFR will be forced to push the update back to a later date. Remember, these dates are ETAs. They do not serve as concrete roll out dates.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android Lollipop update is also confirmed though unlike the Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 update, the Galaxy S4’s update remains in testing behind the scenes. We’ve seen a number of small details emerge but only one concrete release date detail.

International

Samsung recently confirmed the Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date for early 2015. The company did not offer any specifics only to say that the roll out for the aging former flagship will start next year. It’s not clear what version Samsung will release though with other devices all but confirmed to be getting Android 5.0.1, there’s a good chance it will get Google’s latest.

If the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update mirrors the Galaxy S5’s Lollipop roll out, the international model would get the update first, followed by the Korean variants, followed by everyone else. There’s no guarantee that things will play out this way but we expect the company to do a short beta test in a region like Germany or Poland before pushing it out to the masses.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will only spend a few weeks on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. That’s because the device will be getting upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop at some point in the future. Better yet, it’s going to be upgraded to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, Google’s latest bug fix update.

International

Samsung’s confirmed the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date for early 2015. The company did not offer a specific window for the update’s arrival and it will likely keep users in the dark as it prepares the update in its labs behind the scenes. Everything is dependent on the testing process. Samsung tends to push new updates to its new flagships first so we expect the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop release date to land relatively soon.

France

French carrier SFR says that it’s shooting for a Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop roll out in January. Like its Galaxy S5 Lollipop release date, this is an ETA which means that the company could roll it out sooner, or later, than that. With the holidays approaching, there’s a good chance that we’ll see SFR miss December and work to deliver an upgrade next month.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

The Galaxy Note Edge, a Galaxy Note 4 variant with a curved display, currently runs Android 4.4.4. Not for long. The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Android 5.0.1 update is all but confirmed and it will be landing for Galaxy Note Edge users at some point in the future.

International

Right now, the only lead on the release date comes from SamMobile, the site in possession of many of these updates. The site claims that Samsung is making substantial progress on the Galaxy S5 LTE-A, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge Android 5.0.1 updates and that “it should be ready to start rolling out these updates sometime next month.” Meaning, January.

It’s worth noting that the Galaxy Note Edge was not included in the initial batch of confirmed Android 5.0 updates. Samsung, for whatever reason, did not confirm its arrival for early 2015.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update is not out yet but it will be some time next year. We’ve seen the software leak out ahead of its release, a sign that Samsung is making progress behind the scenes.

It’s not clear if the Galaxy Note 3 will get Android 5.0 or Android 5.0.1 but with Android 5.0.1 now thought to be coming to multiple devices in 2015, there’s a good chance that Samsung will shift to the newer version for the aging device.

International

Samsung’s confirmed the Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop release date for early 2015. The company did not offer any specific and it’s not clear when the update will roll out. Again, it’s important to note that Samsung’s roll outs typically take several months and they are extremely unpredictable. There’s no telling where the update will start and where it will end.
