It’s now December which means a new Battlefield 1 update is getting close. With a release date now confirmed we want to take an early look at what we know, and what we think we know, about the December Battlefield 1 update for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Last month, DICE delivered a massive Battlefield 1 update that delivered new features (Rent-A-Server program, changes to the Suez map, etc) and a host of bug fixes for problems.
The fall Battlefield 1 update fixed a lot of issues but it also brought issues of its own. Battlefield 1 owners on all three platforms continue to complain about a myriad of problems. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that the developer is cooking up another Battlefield 1 update for this month. And while the company hasn’t confirmed an official change log, we already know quite a bit about the December Battlefield 1 update.
Been compiling the patch notes for the Giant’s Shadow update during the last week. Can’t wait for you all to see them. Juicy stuff.

Today we want to take a look at everything we currently know about the upcoming December Battlefield 1 update.
There are still a ton of blanks and we’ll continue to update this post with new details as new information becomes available. Check back for frequent updates.
December Battlefield 1 Update Release Date
The December Battlefield 1 update will arrive on December 13th, the same day the Giant’s Shadow map arrives for Premium Pass holders and those that pre-ordered a physical/digital copy of Battlefield 1.
When DICE is ready to push the update out it will confirm the roll out on its social media channels and its official Game Updates forums.
Expect the developer to take its Battlefield 1 servers offline in order to deploy the update across all platforms and regions.
Here’s how it looked for the November update. We’d expect the company to follow similar protocol for the December update.
- PC: Multiplayer went offline for 1h starting at 08.00 UTC / 12.00 AM PT.
- PS4: Multiplayer went offline for 1h starting at 10.00 UTC / 2.00 AM PT.
- Xbox One: Multiplayer went offline for 1h starting 12.00 UTC / 4.00 AM PT.
You can expect the official change log to be posted once the update is live.
Giant’s Shadow Map
The December Battlefield 1 update will bring the Giant’s Shadow map with it. Those who pre-ordered the game will get access to the map on December 13th while everyone else will get it a week later on December 20th.
Giant’s Shadow is a free map that takes players to the Battle of the Selle. If you aren’t a history buff, note that the Battle of the Selle took place near the Selle River in France and saw the Germans battling a mostly British force. Here’s how EA DICE describes the map:
Prepare to take part in the Battle of the Selle in the cold autumn of 1918. Here, the fighting moves out of the trenches and into open country where a massive crashed airship casts its shadow onto the battlefield. The British forces have broken through the Hindenburg line and are now in pursuit towards an important railway center. Fierce infantry and tank engagements ensue on the open ground and river banks alongside the Cateu-Wassigny railway where an armored train can still turn the tide.
In the buildup to the December update’s release, the developer’s released a Giant’s Shadow trailer that shows off the map and its components for the first time. You can watch the trailer below.
We expect Giant’s Shadow to be one of the biggest pieces of the December update but it won’t be the only piece.
The developer’s confirmed a new weapon and it will be coming with Giant’s Shadow and the December Battlefield 1 update.
The update will bring the Grenade Crossbow, a new to the Support class’s arsenal of devices. The gadget can silently fire Fragmentation grenades or High Explosive grenades.
Nothing is confirmed but there’s a chance the long-awaited Spectator Mode makes it into the December update for Battlefield 1.

DICE is reportedly working on the new mode and it will be included in this month’s update if it’s ready to go. If it doesn’t make it in this update it will surely make it into one next year.
The new Spectator Mode will (obviously) give you the ability to view the chaos on the battlefield from a unique perspective.
Bug Fixes & Other Changes
There are still tons of Battlefield 1 problems lingering about so we expect the December update to include a number of tweaks and fixes for all three platforms including Sony’s new PS4 Pro.
EA’s been investigating degradation issues that occurred on the PS4/PS4 Pro/PC after the fall Battlefield 1 update and we expect this update to provide some solutions.
The company recently confirmed fixes for FPS drops and blurry textures that emerged in the PS4’s 1.04 update.
We expect the usual array of tweaks to the game’s weapons, gadgets, vehicles, modes, and maps as the company works to obtain a better balance.
It also looks like the company will increase the number of maps you can set in a server’s rotation (it’s currently at 6) and we could see a change to the way friendly and enemy placed explosives appear on the HUD.
Those working on the next patch have also confirmed fixes for lingering Battlefield 1 SLI issues. We might also see fixes for problems Quitting and an issue where some players are unable to shoot after being revived.
At this point, it’s safe to assume the December Battlefield 1 update will come with a lengthy list of tweaks and bug fixes for all three platforms.
There are also a number of rumored features out there. The rumored list includes a fix for the Quit button, more custom servers, and some modifications to Battlepacks and Medals.
Again, these are all rumored changes and should be taken with an immense grain of salt as we approach the update’s release date.
It’s worth noting that the source of these rumors got the December 13th release date correct.
Buy It If You Want the Battlefield 1 DLC ASAP
If you know you'll want access to the Battlefield 1 DLC as soon as its released for Xbox One/PS4/PC, you'll want to think about picking up the Battlefield 1 Premium Pass.
The Battlefield 1 Premium Pass comes with several perks but the best perk is the early access to the game's downloadable content.
If you're a Premium Pass holder, you'll get the game's four expansion packs two weeks before non-Premium Pass holders.
So if you want to get a bit of a head start on learning the new weapons, new classes, new modes, and new maps, the Premium Pass is the route you'll probably want to take.
The first Battlefield 1 DLC add-on, They Shall Not Pass, arrives in March 2017 for Premium Pass holders. We don't have a specific release date yet.
