10 Things to Do Before the iPhone 6s Release Date

Published

on

If you’re pre-ordered the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus or if you’re planning to walk into a store on Friday, there are some things you’ll want to do ahead of the highly anticipated iPhone 6s release date.

On September 9th, Apple confirmed the elephants in the room. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, two devices that had been rumored for several months, took centerstage as the company showed off its extensive fall pipeline to consumers around the world.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus come with a number of big time upgrades and it’s those upgrades that have driven millions of consumers to put in an iPhone 6s order ahead of their big release date on Friday morning.

The iPhone 6s release date will land for the United States, and several other key regions, on September 25th. The release day is the day that iPhone 6s pre-orders will arrive and it’s also the first day that stores will start selling the physical version of the device. It’s a big day for Apple, Apple enthusiasts and those looking to pickup a new smartphone.

With an iPhone 6s release date in sight, now is the time to start paying attention if you’ve put in an order or if you’ve been planning to become a part of Friday’s spectacle at an Apple Store or at another retail location. You’ll want to be prepared.

Here, we outline some things that iPhone 6s buyers will want to do ahead of Friday’s iPhone 6s release date. Release days have the potential to be painful and we want to help make Friday’s iPhone 6s release as painless as possible.

Backup Your Files

We’ll start with a few things that all iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus buyers will want to do ahead of the iPhone 6s release date on Friday.

First, you’ll want to make sure that your files and data are all backed up before you activate and sync your brand new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus on Friday. While we don’t anticipate widespread problems, you’ll want to be safe rather than sorry.

We’ve put together a guide that will take you through the backup process and you should get this done today or tomorrow.

Get Familiar with the iPhone 6s & iOS 9

If you haven’t already, now would also be a great time to get familiar with the important iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus features and the iOS 9 software that will be on board your new device.

We’ve put together a guide that takes you through the key iPhone 6s features and changes that you need to know about. Get familiar with them now so that you’re ready to start taking full advantage of what the new flagship has to offer.

You’ll also want to get acquainted with the iOS 9 update, the software that’s on board the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. This is especially important if this iPhone is going to be your first. Our list of quick tips for new iOS 9 users will help you get started.

Decide What to Do With Your Old Phone

You’ll also want to make a plan for your old device. Trading in your old device can knock some of the price off the cost of your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus purchase so it would be wise to look into that now, especially if you’re going to be paying big bucks on Friday.

If you’re planning to trade your device in on Friday, make sure you’ve completely wiped all of your personal information and all your sensitive files from it before you hand it off to your carrier or someone else.

Make Sure You Have Your Important Info

If you are planning to go into a store on Friday (or any time after that) to buy the iPhone 6s or pick up a reservation, you’ll want to make sure you have all of your pertinent information with you.

This includes your credit card, credit card information, and all of the authorized account info for Apple and the carrier you’re buying from. The more you have on hand the better because you never know what kind of snags you might encounter during the buying process or the pickup process.

Figure Out Store Hours

If you plan to go into a store on Friday, you’ll want to make sure that the store you’re going to is going to be opening up its doors early.

Apple Stores and most carrier locations will be opening at 8AM local time. We expect retailers to follow suit but you’ll still want to drop by today or tomorrow or give them a call before Thursday night just to make sure.

If the store is located in a mall, you might need to call ahead to the mall to see which doors will be open and when. We’ve seen things get pretty specific on iPhone release day and you’ll want to make sure you have a firm grasp so that you’re not late to work or wasting time.

Figure Out When You Need to Arrive

You’ll also want to figure out when you need to arrive.

If you’re planning to buy the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, you might need to arrive pretty early on release day to ensure you get the model that you want. The iPhone 6s Plus has been pretty hard to find ahead of the release date so if you want that model, you might need to give yourself a bigger cushion.

Talk to people that have been through it before (friends or strangers on social media) and don’t be afraid to call ahead.

If you are picking up an iPhone 6s on reserve, Apple recommends that you arrive about 15 minutes before your pickup time. Here’s what the company told us:

Glad to know you’ll be one of the first to get the newest phone!  Since your reservation is for 8:00, we will be ready for you then.  I would say to show up at least 15 minutes early to be safe.  I’m checking on if the mall is going to have specific doors open, or where the best spot to enter will be.  I’ll let you know!

Pack Accordingly

If you aren’t picking up an iPhone 6s reservation, you’ll want to bring some extras along to make your potential wait a little more bearable.

We recommend bringing a chair (if it’s extremely portable), a snack and coffee, a book if you’re planning to buy at a major Apple Store, and a battery pack for your phone if you have one.

It’s difficult to predict how long you might wait in line so it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially if you won’t have a car nearby.

Add Your Discover Card to Apple Pay

If you’re using a Discover Card and you have a device that’s capable of taking advantage of Apple Pay, you’ll want to link that card to your account right now.

If you do that before you go in on Friday and you pay with Apple Pay, you’ll be able to get 10% back on any purchases you make inside the Apple Store. That’s big for those looking to save money on the phone itself but also on iPhone 6s accessories.

Start Tracking Your iPhone 6s Order

If you put in an iPhone 6s pre-order ahead of the iPhone 6s release date, you’ll want to keep an eye on your shipment ahead of Friday’s delivery date.

To help you with that, we’ve put together a quick guide that shows you how to properly track your incoming iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus delivery ahead of Friday’s release.

This is especially important if you live in an area that will be impacted by The Pope’s tour in the United States.

Pre-Sign for Delivery If You Need To

If you bought through Apple and you know that you’re not going to be home on Friday, you’ll want to sign for your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus order ahead of time.

If no one answers the door, the delivery person won’t be able to drop it off. Apple requires a signature for an iPhone delivery. To do that, head on over to Apple’s website.

You have another option too. You can have the delivery company (probably UPS) hold your package at a nearby location. To do that, you’ll need to track down your order information and verify the company delivering it.

Once you do that, you’ll want to head to their website to inquire about your pickup options on Friday morning or afternoon.
