If you're in the market for a rugged phone, you might have your eyes on a budget model like the Galaxy S7 Active or Galaxy S6 Active. Please do your best to avoid them.

Like their counterparts (Galaxy S6/Galaxy S7), these phones no longer receive regular software support from Samsung or its carriers. They're stuck on old software running on old hardware. It's not the ideal combo, especially when you consider the alternatives.

If you really want to go with a rugged Samsung phone, go with the Galaxy S8 Active, the latest and perhaps final entry in the Active series. It has a better combination of hardware and software which means you'll be able to hold onto it for much longer.

Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 provide pretty good protection from the elements, but if you want a truly rugged device, you'll probably want to look at phones like the Blackview BV5500 or Ulefone Armor 6.
