According to the developer, the game is set in 1899, right around the time the wild west was coming to an end in America. And thanks to the game trailers, we know Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in an open world where players control a character named Arthur Morgan. Morgan is a member of the Van der Linde gang. If that name sounds familiar it should be if you played the original Red Dead Redemption. Dutch Van der Linde was a central character and one of the original's main protagonists. The original's main protagonist, John Marston, will make an appearance in the game and so will Bill Williamson. In other words, Red Dead 2 is a prequel about Dutch's gang. Here's how Rockstar describes the game's plot: "After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him."
