According to the developer, the game is set in 1899, right around the time the wild west was coming to an end in America. And thanks to the game trailers, we know Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in an open world where players control a character named Arthur Morgan. Morgan is a member of the Van der Linde gang.

If that name sounds familiar it should be if you played the original Red Dead Redemption. Dutch Van der Linde was a central character and one of the original's main protagonists. 

The original's main protagonist, John Marston, will make an appearance in the game and so will Bill Williamson. In other words, Red Dead 2 is a prequel about Dutch's gang.

Here's how Rockstar describes the game's plot:

"After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him."

We know the characters and some of the plot, but Rockstar's keeping many of the single player details a secret in the buildup to the game's launch. 

A recent report from Trusted Reviews outlines some potential single player details. These include:

• Locations include Armadillo and Ridgewood and they'll include NPC's like general store owners, gunsmiths and undertakers.
• Tons of side activities will be available to explore, just like the original. 
• Gambling will make a return. 
• Horsemanship challenges.
• Random events will make a comeback and include treasure hunts, bounty hunts, and various adventures.
• The story will change based on your actions. This includes different mission outcomes and different lines of dialogue. 

Expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to come with the expansive single player experience you've come to expect from Rockstar and its games.
