Published

Game updates are always exciting, and the new GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update that launches on Xbox One, PS4 and Windows PCs soon is no exception. Coming this August, Smuggler’s Run will give GTA Online players another way to boost their income.

The new wave of content is the latest set of upgrades to come to the online role-playing game that debuted with Grand Theft Auto 5 back in 2013. Over the years, Rockstar has added criminal biker gangs, drug enterprises, online heists and loads of new vehicles to GTA Online for free.

Smuggler’s Run allows gamers to create airborne smuggling empires with their own fleet of airships and cargo planes. The update launches on August 29th. Here’s everything else we know about the new batch of add-on content. Rockstar recently revealed the GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update on its Rockstar Newswire blog.

GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Release Date

The GTA Online Smuggler’s Run release date is Tuesday, August 29th. On that day, the update will roll out to every version of GTA Online that developer Rockstar Games still supports. That’s the versions of the game on Xbox One, PS4 and Windows.

Unfortunately, that also means that Xbox 360 and PS3 users won’t get the GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update. Rockstar has dropped support for those versions of the game. Players on those consoles must update to a current version of the title to get this update. And, unfortunately, character progress no longer transfers from the Xbox 360 and PS3 to their successors. You will need to create a new character if you do upgrade consoles to get this DLC.

New GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update Features

Smuggler’s Run starts with you getting a new business partner named Nervous Ron. Ron already has a huge smuggling operation running across Los Santos, but he needs someone to lead deliveries and keep his merchandise safe from people who want to shut him down.

You use different vehicles to make deliveries all over the in-game world. Some of these deliveries are so dangerous that a fighter jet escort is necessary to get them done. All told, the gameplay isn’t all that different from the criminal enterprises that are already in the game, though, air combat adds a new dimension that players haven’t dealt with in other criminal enterprises they’ve started. You also get a new air smuggling headquarters and mechanic named Charlie to go with your new GTA Online business.

GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update Cars, Weapons & Vehicles

A new slate of air vehicles come with the GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update. In the trailer Rockstar released for the update, there are helicopters that allow you to drop cargo with precision and giant planes that can carry a ton of merchandise. One of the planes is an old-style bomber with a defense turret that players can use to fight off any enemies that try to stop them on their cargo run.

Rockstar hasn’t revealed a complete list of every new item that you can add to your garage and closet with the Smuggler’s Run Update. Presumably, we’ll learn more about all the new vehicles, weapons and clothing this update contains when it launches on August 29th. We do know that you can customize your aircraft before you leave for missions in the game.

GTA Online Smuggler’s Run Update Price

Don’t worry about buying Xbox Live or PlayStation Store credit to purchase the GTA Online Smuggler’s Update. The new content is free to anyone that has an Xbox One, PS4 or Windows copy of GTA 5 already.

That being said, expect to work really hard in the game to get your new smuggling business running. New content in GTA Online always costs a lot of money, and you will need to have a lot of in-game cash stashed to afford this update’s best stuff the moment it launches.

You can skip grinding for in-game cash by buying Shark Cards. Shark Cards provide a shortcut by letting you purchase in-game cash with your real money. They start at $4.99, and they can cost as much as $99.99.
