10 Common iPhone 5 Problems & How to Fix Them

iPhone 5 users are running into problems with iOS 10, iOS 9 and older versions of Apple’s operating system. With that in mind we want to show you how to fix the most common iPhone 5 problems.

In September, after a lengthy stay in Apple’s beta program, Apple released iOS 10 for the iPhone 5 and others. The iOS 10 update brought tons of features and enhancements to the iPhone 5 but it also brought some problems to the former flagship.

We’ve detailed many of these iOS 10 problems in the months since the release and the list continues to grow as more iPhone 5 users install iOS 10.

iPhone 5 users need help and today we want to share some fixes for common iPhone 5 problems. These fixes will cover the most common issues found on iOS 7, iOS 8 iOS 9, and iOS 10.

There’s no guarantee they’ll fix your issue but they’re worth a shot if you don’t want to take your device into an Apple Store just yet.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Battery Life Problems

Some iPhone 5 users are experiencing battery life woes after making the move to Apple’s iOS 10 operating system.

There’s also a good chance that the battery drain on the iPhone 5 isn’t being caused by iOS 10 or whatever operating system you’re currently running. Third-party apps have a way of wrecking havoc on an iPhone’s juice.

If you start to notice a drain on battery, take a look at our list of fixes for bad iPhone 5 battery life. They will help you better manage your apps and services and if you’re lucky, help you get rid of that annoying battery drain.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Issues

iPhone 5 Wi-Fi issues date back several years and we expect them to continue as the months and years go on.

iPhone 5 users have complained about a wide variety of issues from grayed out Wi-Fi to unstable connections. Those issues continue to popup after Apple’s iOS 10 release and we’ve heard from a few iPhone 5 users who’ve seen issues with the latest version of the operating system.

There is no guaranteed fix for iPhone 5 Wi-Fi issues but there are a few things that users can try before performing a factory reset, replacing a router, or taking the iPhone down to an Apple Store.

First, if you can, try restarting the modem. Leave it off for a solid minute and then plug it back in to see if that helps. If it doesn’t, try restarting your phone.

If none of that works you’ll will want to reset your network settings. To do this, turn on your iPhone 5 and head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

You will need the passcode and again, a few minutes of time because the phone is going to reboot itself to complete the changes. If you decide to try this fix you’ll also want to track down commonly used Wi-Fi passwords because you will need to input them again.

If that doesn’t fix things, you can also try turning off Wi-Fi Networking. To do that, head to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. After that reboot the phone.

If none of this helps, take a look at Apple’s list of potential fixes for Wi-Fi issues.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are among the most common iOS issues and iPhone 5 users are running into them on iOS 10 and older versions of iOS.

While there doesn’t appear to be a cure all fix, we know of a few potential remedies to try with your iPhone 5.

First, try forgetting the Bluetooth connection giving you a problem. Go to your Settings > Bluetooth > and select the proper connection using the circular blue “i” tab and then tap Forget this Device.

If that doesn’t help you’ll want to first try resetting your Network Settings. To do that head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

You can also try a reset to all settings. To do this, head to Settings > General > Reset > and select Reset All Settings.

Again, before you try either of those, have your Wi-Fi passwords handy.

How to Fix iPhone 5 App Issues

We’ve been hearing a lot of complaints about applications crashing and freezing in iOS 10.

Apple’s not going to be fixing these issues and it’s going to be up to third-party developers to take care of these problems. This means that fixes, permanent ones, could take awhile.

First, make sure applications on your iPhone 5 are updated. App updates with support for iOS 10 have been trickling out since launch. Many iPhone users are horrible about updating apps and that’s a habit that can, and should, be broken immediately.

iPhone 5 users who are forgetful or lazy will want to turn on automatic App Store updates because it will keep apps automatically updated and ensure that they are always on the latest version with the latest bug fixes.

To do that, head into Settings > iTunes & App Store > toggle Updates on.

If you need additional assistance, get in contact with the developer or find the app’s support forum. Spotify’s support forum is just one example.

How to Improve Performance on iPhone 5

Our iOS 10 experience on the iPhone 5 has been pretty good thus far. For a device that’s going on five years old, it’s still performing at a pretty high level. That said, we’ve heard from some iPhone 5 users who are noticing a drop in performance.

There are some ways to speed up the performance on the iPhone 5 should it get a little choppy. We’ve outlined a number of different strategies including reducing animations and pretty effects, resetting settings, or restoring back to factory settings.

Keep in mind, there is no cure all for performance issues on the iPhone 5 or any other iPhone. If nothing works, you might have to resort to restoring from a backup.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Landscape Issues

The iPhone 5 can sometimes get stuck in landscape mode. This is a huge problem, especially when using the camera app.

If this happens you can lock the orientation of the phone in portrait. This way, when the iPhone 5 is utilizing an app like camera, it won’t shift to landscape mode, get stuck, and potentially ruin the footage that is being shot.

To lock it in portrait, pull up Control Center from the bottom of the phone, look for the lock in the top right corner, and hit that. This will lock it up so that it won’t move out of portrait mode.

If that doesn’t work, try a hard reset. Hold down the home button and power button for 10 seconds until the iPhone 5 reboots.

How to Fix iPhone 5 iMessage Problems

iPhone 5 iMessage problems are extremely common and users continue to complain about issues after the iOS 10 update. Here’s how to potentially fix those issues.

First, try toggling iMessage off and on. If that doesn’t work, try rebooting the phone. If neither of those work, it’s time to reset the device’s network settings.

To do that, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The phone will reboot, and while the stored Wi-Fi networks will be lost, reentering a Wi-Fi password is a small price to pay for working iMessages.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Random Reboots

We’ve heard about occasional random reboots on the iPhone after the arrival of iOS 10.2. It can be difficult to fix these but here’s what to try.

First, try restarting the iPhone 5. This helped us when we encountered random reboots on the iPhone in iOS 10.

We also recommend resetting all of your iPhone 5’s settings. To do that, Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

It also might be worth it to uninstall recent apps if the problems just started. If nothing works, iPhone 5 you will simply have to wait for the next iOS update.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Keyboard Lag

We’ve encountered the occasional keyboard lag on the iPhone 5 when shooting off an email or iMessage. There are a few things iPhone 5 users can try to solve these problems should they pop up during email or messaging.

First try resetting your phone. If you haven’t done this in awhile, a simple restart could help return things to normal.

If that doesn’t work, try resetting all of your device’s settings. To do that, General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Cellular Data Issues

We’ve heard complaints about cellular data issues on the iPhone 5. Slow connections, no connections and other random problems have plagued some iPhone users in the months since the iOS 10 release.

To try and fix these, first try restarting the iPhone 5. This has worked for us in the past. If that simply fix doesn’t work, try toggling cellular data on and off. This also has had a positive effect on our connectivity. To do that, Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off.

Finally, if none of that works, try flipping Airplane Mode on, waiting 30 seconds, and then flipping it off. This, like the other fixes, has worked to dislodge cellular data issues in the past.

How to Fix iPhone 5 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If none of this works and Apple’s discussion forums aren’t helping, we have two recommendations. First, take the iPhone or iPad to a Genius Bar at the local Apple Store. They’ll help diagnose the problem.

If you don’t want to leave the house, you can get in contact with Apple’s customer support on Twitter for help.

If you’re at the end of your rope, it’s time to consider a factory reset. Factory resets will wipe the iPhone 5 clean though it has worked wonders for devices in the past.

To do that choose Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, this will wipe everything from the iPhone or iPad, so you might want to make a backup just in case.

Here’s how to restore from a backup.

3 Reasons Not to Install iOS 10.3.3 & 9 Reasons You Should

Install iOS 10.3.3 If You Want Better Security

Install iOS 10.3.3 If You Want Better Security

If you value your security, you'll want to seriously consider downloading the iOS 10.3.3 update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

iOS 10.3.3 brings 24 security patches addressing vulnerabilities plaguing Contacts, Messages, Notifications, and Safari.

It also includes a patch for a potentially dangerous Wi-Fi exploit dubbed "Broadpwn." That patch alone is a great reason to install iOS 10.3.3 right now or in the immediate future.

If you failed to download previous versions of iOS, your iOS 10.3.3 update will bring even more security features.

If you passed on iOS 10.3.2, iOS 10.3.3 will deliver 23 additional security patches for potentially dangerous issues.

If you skipped iOS 10.3.1, your iOS 10.3.3 update will bring its lone security patch. If you skipped iOS 10.3, iOS 10.3.3 will bring its monster list of patches to your device.

The iOS 10.3 update delivered over 60 known patches for potential exploits. That's substantial, even for a milestone upgrade.

If you skipped the iOS 10.2.1 update and/or the iOS 10.2 update, iOS 10.3.3 brings their security patches with it. The iOS 10.2.1 update had 14 important patches on board. You can see them all right here

If you failed to install Apple's iOS 9.3.5 update, iOS 10.3.3 will also bring the three crucial security patches it delivered last year. These patch up serious security problems that could potentially expose your calls, contacts, texts, and emails.

These patches enhance the security on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch making them ideal for those of you who store sensitive files/data on your device.

Since installing ios8 on my iPhone 5 I have been unable to update any of my Apps. I try to install updates as soon as they are available but I now have a queue of 10 to update and none will install.

Going to the Genius Desk is EXTREMELY time consuming. I tried to do the ios update and the phone stuck on the agree – disagree to the privacy statement. Nothing I do can get me past that page. I have tried pushing the agree button, but nothing happens. I can’t do any of the suggested corrections because I can’t get off that page. If I have to waste my time going to the Genius Desk I will remember when it is time to replace the phone. This is really poor service.

iOS 8 has crippled my iPhone. ( 5). Many of my most productive apps crash. I cannot get updates – the worst part is that Apple knows the issues and is acting like they rolled out a great piece of SW. HA!

I am getting tired of workarounds and crappy support. ( ignoring people is not a style of customer support that wins customer loyalty ).

I am about a week away from buying an android device. I am fed up.

So my iPhone 5C won’t show the correct time. I have tried setting it manually and automatically and it will work for a while until I turn the screen off. Then when I turn it back on the time that was shown prior to the screen being on will show. Because of this I am unable to receive certain emails and texts because they are sent at a time my phone has not reached yet. In most cases the time goes back in the past and stays for days until I try to change it again. Repeat. This sucks. Help.

My phone is crazy after updating. . .I can’t make calls but people can call me but only leave a message. Phone won’t ring either. I can’t send a message to most contacts. Some I can, some I can’t. I can receive messages though but not sure how many aren’t coming through. Power draining like a dripping faucet. All my data isn’t backing up to the Cloud or ITunes either for me to reset to factory settings. I never had any problems ever with my phone till this update. I’m worried cause I have pictures and videos I can’t lose!

I have been using iPhone 5 for last 2 years. It got a screen problem recently. There was a black spot developed a day back which increased in a semi circular form and covering P in QWERTY ( in normal view). It has also developed a horizontal glassy film just below first line of QWERTY. Please suggest me a solution of such abnormality.

I had my IPHONE 5S for over a year now and just recently took it to the Apple store because the phone was heating up and having to constantly charge it. The customer service person told me it was normal and to try use any ground socket instead of my computer. Long story short just this past monday it wouldn’t charge at all so I took it back to Apple store. I was told there was nothing I could do but purchase another phone. Has this happened to anyone else?

Does anybody have a problem with the live keys on the screen while talking on the phone? By merely touching the screen with my ear the number pad beeps incessantly and records the numbers on the phone. If I am listening in a recorded menu, this sends me off into unrelated parts of the menu. If I am on the action screen while talking, ie where the mute, facebook, speaker, etc action buttons are found, my ear will click me over to any of these other functionalities.
I have had many friends try and use my phone and have had the same problem. It is just about impossible for me to use my phone, normally. I have to use on speaker nearly all the time to the irritation of all around me. HELP!

Firstly it’s very exciting to have software updates in iPhones n experience new features every time… But that’s not fiat to Apple… The updates data it displays on our products is usually MB very small … But when we connect to upgrade it… It is usually in GB n we have to wait until it updates successfully… Sometimes it’s just fail in between and we have to reconnect again… So what is the updates is only done to the particul content or issue n not all of the iPhone software… Like any other product software is… Just the required needs to be updates… Why all of it.

I have and I phone 5s. Just lately it has been unable to control. It seems to do just what it wants. It may be OK for two days then I cannot do anything with it. It even starts clicking over programs on its own. Sometimes it is impossible to use it at all.

The iphone 5s is a frustrating little POS. Who has time to research and fix all these issues? You pay $500-600 for a device and the device should work perfect out of the box. The battery life on this phone is pathetic. A single hour of web surfing will drain a full charge. Sorry Apple…Im going Samsung/Android

My iphone5s has the following problem. I can make and receive calls but even though I can hear the other side, they cannot. If I reboot the phone, then it works fine for a few hours but then the problem reoccurs and I have to reboot the phone again.

Just a quick fix for people like me who updated to ios9 and where they lost Cellular data (I have T-Mobile and an unlocked phone).

You just go to your SETTINGS > GENERAL > PROFILES and delete the Mobile Internet profile there. Restart your phone and your internet should be back

Hi. My IPhone 5 suddenly have this problem, whereby half of the screen is continuously flickering, and is not as responsive as the top half. The top half is perfectly fine, which the bottom half is flickering, and there is very less responsive. I tried restarting it, and I had updated it to iOS 9.3.4. Still nothing worked. Please Help!!
