With macOS Sierra installed the files you save to your desktop and your documents folder are available to you anywhere with iCloud.

That includes another Mac, your iPhone or iPad. There is no need to specifically save these in iCloud, just put them where you normally would. On OS X El Capitan you must specifically choose to save to iCloud.
