As devices age, the price of making them drops. Companies then pass on that savings to buyers. At least, that’s what usually happens. Microsoft is joining Apple in fighting that trend. Despite the Surface Pro 4 debuting in 2015, it remains almost as expensive.

At launch, the Surface Pro 4 cost $899. The Surface Pro 4 is $799.99 today but doesn’t include the $60 Surface Pen that the original version did. Compare that price to Surface Pro 4 alternatives and things get interesting.

The Lenovo Miix 510 costs $629. It offers a more powerful current-generation Intel Core i3 processor. What’s more, it has a USB 3 Type-C port. The Samsung Galaxy TabPro S comes with the Intel Core m3 processor and a keyboard. It costs $599.99 from the Microsoft Store. The Dell XPS 12 has a more powerful Intel Core m5 processor, double the RAM and double the storage of the entry-level Surface Pro 4.
