Carriers push updates to smartphones at a very slow pace. This isn't a secret. Last year many were worried the Pixel would get slow updates from Verizon, but that wasn't the case. 

Google handled everything, and they'll do that again this year. Meaning it doesn't matter where you get a Pixel 2, updates like Android 8.1 or 9.0 will come directly from Google.
