If you want a tablet, but don't want a huge screen, Apple's iPad mini series is worthy of consideration. Just be sure to avoid the iPad mini 2.

The iPad mini 2 is Apple's 7.9-inch slate from late 2013. The device is currently running iOS 12, and running it pretty well, but the device will, like the iPad Air, stay behind on iOS 12. It won't get iPadOS 13.

You might be able to live without the new features, but missing out on regular bug fixes and security patches might be a tougher pill to swallow, especially if you plan to use the iPad mini 2 at your business.

iPad mini 2 owners should think about upgrading to a new tablet this year and those looking to upgrade to the iPad mini 2 should start looking elsewhere. Fortunately, there are a bunch of options out there.

If you want a smaller tablet, we recommend looking hard at Apple's iPad mini 5. It comes with some nice internals and it runs iPadOS 13.

It should also get iPadOS 14, iPadOS 15, and iPadOS 16 making it ideal for those of you looking to hold onto your next tablet for several years.

The iPad mini 5 outperforms its predecessors (cameras, processing power, battery life, etc) and it's worth a look.

If you don't mind moving away from Apple, you might look at Amazon's stable of Fire tablets. They're cheap and dependable.
