5 Ways the iPhone 8 Surprised Me in 24 Hours

Published

on

It’s easy to gloss over the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus by setting you’re eyes on the iPhone X, but that’s a mistake. After spending a day with the iPhone 8 Plus I found several surprises that make this an excellent phone, even if the iPhone X will deliver more.

While it does feel much like a small refresh, the new features make it a very different phone. The new glass back makes it a little heavier, and a little more easy to slide around in your pocket. Even though it looks great, it’s a phone made for a case. Or at least for AppleCare+.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are more affordable than the iPhone X, and you can buy them now and likely find them in stock through the holiday season better than you can the bolder iPhone X. That alone isn’t a reason to buy one, unless you really, really need a new iPhone.

I upgraded to the 64GB iPhone 8 Plus in the new gold color option from an iPhone 7 Plus. I wasn’t expecting a lot. The main reason I have this iPhone is to write many of our setup guides. I dove in and replaced my iPhone 7 Plus giving up half of my storage space in the process. But gaining a lot for the switch.

The iPhone 8 is actually a really solid upgrade. Here’s how the iPhone 8 Plus surprised me in just a day;

  • iPhone 8 Plus Camera Upgrades
  • True Tone Display & HDR
  • Wireless and Fast Charging
  • iPhone 8 Speed
  • 64GB of Storage is Livable

The iPhone 8 Plus camera is a great upgrade from the iPhone 7 Plus.

Simply put, you can take better looking pictures with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. You don’t need to mess with settings or options for most of these, you just need to point the iPhone and take a picture.

The new sensor and tech allows me to take better photos in low light. Use cool new portrait lighting to spice up photos and there’s a cool flash upgrade that fills in the background better so you get the whole picture, not just the first subject your flash hits.

On the iPhone 8 Plus you can use the new Portrait Lighting that is in beta to take really cool portraits of people and pets. It’s not as good as a professional in a studio, but it’s amazing for a phone.

The camera can also record 4K at 60 frames per second, double the frames per second of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. This means you can capture motion better while filming in 4K. It’s not a feature everyone will use since it requires 400MB per minute of footage.
