If you plan to keep your next iPad for a long time think about waiting for the 2019 iPad.

If you like to hold onto your gadgets for three years or more, buying a model from the upcoming generation of iPads has a lot of appeal. 

We probably won't hear about this on stage or in a press release, but the 2019 iPad will likely get four years (or more) of software support. That means 4+ years of new software features, security patches, and bug fixes. 

While you might be tempted to go with an older (and cheaper) iPad model, support for those devices will end much sooner.

The device's hardware also ensures you get the latest features from Apple. Older devices typically don't get the full version of iOS due to hardware limitations.

We expect the new iPad to run the full blown version of iOS 12.
