This is what you need to know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the 2019 Call of Duty release that is switching to a throwback name that will likely confuse some gamers.
Here’s what you need to know about the new Call of Duty game for 2019 that arrives in October with a return of the single player campaign mode and some of your favorite characters as part of a new story. You’ll also get cross-play support for the first time in a Call of Duty game.
On the multiplayer side, this will likely be a more traditional Call of Duty game focused on the modes many of us grew up with. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 continues to lock down the Call of Duty Battle Royale mode and Activision reportedly tapped Treyarch to deliver Black Ops 5 in 2020 where you can expect more Battle Royale modes.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Release Date
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release date is October 25th for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. This is a Friday, and it doesn’t look like you will need to buy a special edition to play on Friday.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Setting
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a realistic Call of Duty game set in modern times and it will play off of stories pulled straight from the news. Charlie Intel has this to say about the setting after seeing two missions in action;
“And it’s very hard to describe in words how emotional and real these missions were. You really have to see it for yourself to get an understanding of what this all looks like and how it toys with your emotions. There’s parts where you think they’re going to kill a child or hurt someone who is innocent, but they don’t; other parts where you straight up see civilians being murdered. It’s a game that is going to challenge the political climate that exists today, especially with this notion that exists of ‘violence in video games’ for those who do not understand or are part of the gaming industry directly. In many ways, this is the first Call of Duty that is truly deserving of its ‘Mature’ rating. “
We haven’t seen gameplay footage yet, but the cinematic trailer is full of modern events across the globe.
2019 Call of Duty Modern Warfare Beta
You can count on a Call of Duty 2019 beta that arrives for at least two weekends. There is a very good chance that it will come to the PlayStation first, and that PS4 owners will get to play the beta for two weekends while PC players and Xbox One owners will only be able to play for one weekend.
Typically this takes place in August or September, allowing the Infinity Ward to test out balancing and gameplay early enough to be able to incorporate the changes into the version of the game that ships.
This is not a demo, and in most cases you need to pre-order Call of Duty before you can download the game and play.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Editions
There are three Call of Duty: Modern Warfare editions with bonus items available at all stores and two GameStop exclusives. One of these is a massive $199.99 special edition that isn’t fully announced yet.

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Operator Edition – $79.99
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Operator Enhanced Edition – $99.99
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Precision Edition – $99.99
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition – $199.99
Each option comes with a Prestige Token for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and with the more expensive versions you get Operator Edition Premium Digital Items. The Enhanced Edition includes 3,000 Call of Duty Points. The Precision edition packs in digital and real world bonus items.

2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season Pass
Activision announced that they will not offer a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season Pass, but instead will focus on free maps and cross play support.
“Every design decision has been made with our players in mind,” said Patrick Kelly, Creative Director and co-Studio Head, Infinity Ward. “With the launch of Modern Warfare, we’re taking steps to unite the community. First, we plan for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support. Second, we’re eliminating the traditional season pass, so that we can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players. This is just the beginning – there’s much more to come.“
It’s not clear exactly what the post release monetization will be, but we expect to see in app purchases of some kind, potentially focused on cosmetics.
2019 Call of Duty Modern Warfare Systems
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release is coming to the PS4, Xbox One and PS4. This includes all models of these consoles, though you can expect better graphics on the Xbox One X, PS4 Pro and on higher end gaming PCs.
There is cross play support that will allow gamers to play across all three systems. The PC version is only available on Blizzard Battle.net, so you won’t find it on Steam.
There is no support for the Nintendo Switch, and you shouldn’t expect to see it added later on down the line.
What’s Next for Call of Duty:Modern Warfare Announcements
While we learned a lot about the game today, there are still many things that Activision needs to cover. We haven’t seen any actual Call of Duty: Modern Warfare gameplay yet and there is no real information about the multiplayer mode.
Expect to see this arrive in the next few weeks as Activision shares information about what is coming and we get a closer look at all of the pieces of the new Call of Duty game.
