iPhone 6: 5 Things I learned on the First Day

Published

on

The iPhone 6 is the new iPhone that most people will buy. For $200 on contract or  about $25 a month you get a larger screen, impressive camera and sleek new design — but you’ll definitely want to look at case options.

Apple started selling the new iPhones on Friday and after 24 hours we can’t share a full iPhone 6 review, but there are many things that stand out after using the new iPhone for a day.

If you are considering the larger iPhone, make sure you read five things I learned from using the iPhone 6 Plus for a day to figure out how the two compare. For many users the smaller model is just the right size and it fits in my hand very well, but it is a bit slippery.

Apple upgrades the iPhone 6 to a 4.7-inch screen with a 1,330 x 750 resolution, a new 8MP camera with larger pixels and faster, smarter auto focus. Apple Pay arrives in October as a free update to allow users to make payments by tapping the iPhone 6 to a credit card reader at a retailer.

If you are considering buying the iPhone 6, here are five things I learned in the first day of using the new iPhone. For background I upgraded from the iPhone 5s, but I use other Android phones like the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S5 and the new Moto X which feature slightly larger screens.

iPhone 6 is the Right Phone for Most Buyers

The iPhone 6 is larger than the iPhone 5s, but it’s not too big to adjust to in a day. I’m still finding just the right grip and adjusting to the power button on the right side instead of the top, but the iPhone 6 is easy to use with one hand for most apps and actions. When something is out of reach, a double tap on the home button slides the top of screen down to where I can tap on the button without switching grip.

The iPhone 6 Plus uses the display in interesting ways, but for family members and friends who held both, the smaller iPhone is the one they choose. If you are on the fence you should go check out both at a store, but most users will gravitate towards the iPhone 6.

iPhone 6 Screen is a Great Upgrade

Apple didn’t jump to a 1080P display on the iPhone 6, like we see on most Android phones and on the iPhone 6 Plus, but it is still a beautiful screen. The touch screen is incredibly smooth and the curved edges allow your fingers to easily activate the gestures to go back in menus and apps with ease.

Although the iPhone 6 screen doesn't include a 1080P HD display it's still nice.

Switching from the iPhone 5s’ 4-inch display to the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 display is an easy jump and Apple uses the display nicely showing more apps on the screen, more information on web pages and on the Kindle app.

I use both of the new iPhones, and the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display is easier to hold and use throughout the day.

iPhone 6 Camera is Impressive

Apple upgrades the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus camera to deliver better looking photos. The iPhone 6 Plus includes Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). This may be a reason for some buyer to go for the larger model, but the iPhone 6 camera is not a slouch. Using the iPhone 6 to take photos of my pets, a sunset and a variety of other subjects throughout the day delivered great results.

Gotta Be Mobile will share more iPhone 6 photo samples and thoughts in the coming days. Another feature that is really fun to use is the new 240fps slow motion, which is incredibly cool.

iPhone 6 Apps

One of the problems with the huge screen on the 6 Plus is that older apps are blown up, which presents two problems. These apps look a little blurry, certainly not as sharp as apps designed for the larger screen. This problem isn’t as bad on the iPhone 6. Although the screen is bigger than the iPhone 5s, it’s close enough that blown up apps don’t look that bad on the iPhone 6.

The real adjustment comes from the keyboard. When Apple blows an app up to fit the larger screen you are stuck with a larger keyboard. The change is small, but touch typing is harder because the keys move around. Both of these complaints will go away as more iPhone 6 apps arrive in the App Store.

You’ll Want an iPhone 6 Case

The new iPhone 6 design features wonderful curves and it fits in my hand very well, but this is one slipper iPhone. Holding it is a challenge at times because everything is smooth. It turns out those straight chamfered edges on the iPhone 5s did a lot to make the phone easier to hold.

After trying to use the iPhone 6 without a case for a day, it’s already in a Speck CandyShell Wallet case and a Spigen iPhone 6 case while I try to find the best case for me.

You’ll find some of our favorite iPhone 6 cases below, form $8 to $60, depending what you want and how much you want to spend.

One of the most popular iPhone 6 cases is the leather iPhone 6 case from Apple. This case is one that you can find in any Apple Store on release day and is also listed with many carriers.

Apple designs the leather iPhone 6 case with premium leather in a small form factor that adds minimal bulk to the new iPhone. You can find the leather iPhone 6 case in five color options that match the white and black front of the iPhone 6.

Watch out if you buy the red iPhone 6 case as the leather model for the iPhone 5s wore very fast and looked dirty and grey soon after purchasing.
