While you might be tempted to go with an older, cheaper iPad or the 9.7-inch iPad, software support for those devices will end much sooner than it does for the 10.2-inch iPad.

Apple typically keeps devices updated with new features, bug fixes, and security patches for four years before pulling the plug. 

Older models sometimes miss out on features due to hardware limitations. That's something you won't have to worry about for awhile if you go with a newer iPad model. The 10.2-inch iPad, if real, will run the best version of iPadOS 13.
