In 2018, Apple brought its Apple Pencil to the budget 9.7-inch iPad, the first tablet to get it outside the iPad Pro line. In 2019, the company brought Apple Pencil support to the iPad Air line with the release of the iPad Air 3. 

Older iPad Air models don't support Apple Pencil, but the iPad Air 3 comes with support for the original Apple Pencil.

This is not the second-generation Apple Pencil that launched with the new iPad Pro models in 2018, but the original Apple Pencil from 2015. 

The Apple Pencil is an optional accessory, but if you plan to use your iPad Air for more than gaming and consuming content, the stylus could come in handy.
