Apple upgraded the gyroscope and the accelerometer in the Apple Watch 4, and with those upgrades the new model is able to detect when you fall. This is a very specific motion that is different from a trip, and the Apple Watch will now know if the wearer falls. Once the Apple Watch 4 detects a fall, it will pop up an option to call for help. If there is no motion detected within one minute of the fall, the watch will automatically call 911. Falls are the main cause of morbidity and disability in the elderly.
