Fallout 4 will present you with a number of different companion options. The first is a dog called Dogmeat and he can attack enemies and point you in the direction of loot. You'll meet others along the way and you'll want to test them out to see who compliments your style and attributes best.
Some companions are great at picking locks. Some are great with ranged weapons. Some are versed in the art of Stealth. There's also another great reason to use a companion: You can make them carry stuff for you. This has been extremely important for me in the early part of the game. In Fallout 3, I felt like companions just got in the way. I've found them to be far more beneficial in Fallout 4. |
