How to Charge Your iPhone 8 and Listen to Headphones at the Same Time

Published

on

This is what you need to use to listen to charge your iPhone 8 and listen to music at the same time. All of the new iPhones no longer include a headphone jack, forcing users to share the charging port with an adapter that lets you plug in normal headphones. If you want to charge your iPhone 8 and listen to music at the same time you need to use Bluetooth headphones or buy an adapter.

While wireless headphones are a good option, many users rely on a headphone jack to connect their iPhone 8 to a car stereo or simply prefer to listen to music with wired headphones. If that is the case you need to spend a little bit of money on some new iPhone 8 accessories.

You can buy a dongle or you can spend money on a dock if you listen at your desk. Neither option is that great, which is why we use wireless headphones like the AirPods instead of using a bulky dongle.

If you want to charge the iPhone 8 and listen to music at the same time, the Belkin 3.5mm Audio + Charge Rockstar is the adapter you need to buy. This is an official adapter that is guaranteed to work with your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X. Many third-party options on Amazon don’t work after some software updates or have mixed reviews.

This is a new version of the Belkin adapter and it includes a 3.5mm headphone jack built-in instead of a second lightning port. This makes plugging in headphones or connecting your iPhone to an Aux input in a car much easier. It also means you don’t have to worry about losing the adapter while you are traveling or having it slide under a seat. The only downside to this is that you can’t use the included Lighting EarPods or the limited selection of Lightning headphones.

This adapter supports 12W passthrough for charging, which means it won’t likely work with iPhone 8 Fast Charging, but it will work just as fast as normally charging with a higher 12W adapter. You can still use the remote control built-in to headphones and the microphone with this adapter. Belkin sells a version with two Lightning ports for $39.99.

If you want to listen to music while at a desk or next to a night stand, you can use the Apple Lightning Dock. this accessory allows you to plug your iPhone 8 or iPhone X in and then plug in headphones or speakers to the back of the dock.

It’s not as mobile as the adapter above, but it’s handy for using speakers or if you listen to music at a desk using headphones for a good portion of the day. Streaming music can eat away at battery life, so this is a handy way to keep your phone charging while you listen to music. This is available in black, silver, gold and space gray.

Another option if you are going to be in a relatively stable location is to plug in headphones using the Lighting to 3.5mm adapter that Apple provided and use a wireless charger. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X support qi wireless charging so you can use this on a variety of chargers at home or in your car.

The Belkin BoostUp Wireless Charging Pad and the mophie wireless charging base are each $59.99 at Apple and there are many third party wireless chargers on Amazon for $15 and up.

You can also buy a wireless iPhone 8 charger for your car, so you can charge that way and use the Lighting port to connect to your car’s aux-in using the Lighting to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter Apple includes with the iPhone.

These all charge your iPhone and allow you to still use the Lightning port to connect headphones or an adapter for headphones.
