iOS 8 Jailbreak Release: Future Up in the Air

It’s been a month since iOS 8 has been released to the public, but an iOS 8 jailbreak is nowhere to be found.

Ever since the initial announcement of iOS 8, the jailbreak community has been rather curious as to when an iOS 8 jailbreak would hit the public. Of course, we could rely on past history as far as when to expect it, but even that’s a little shaky.

The Jailbreak community on Reddit is usually buzzing with jailbreak hype on a new version of iOS, but so far it’s been extremely quiet, no word on when we should expect an iOS 8 jailbreak to drop.

However, iDigitalTimes interviewed a handful of big-name developers in the jailbreak community, as well as some lesser-known names to see what their opinions were on an iOS 8 jailbreak.

iOS-7-Cydia-tweaks

iH8sn0w is one of the biggest names in the jailbreak community, as he’s responsible for many past jailbreak tools, but when asked if he was interested in working on a jailbreak for iOS 8, he said that he hasn’t “been interested in public jailbreaks lately because of how much of a hassle it is to make them and publish them,” which is probably why we haven’t seen any big jailbreak tools from him in a while.

Another big name in the jailbreak community is p0sixninja, who also says he’s not working on an iOS 8 jailbreak and doesn’t expect any of the veteran developers to work on it either.

Even the Evad3rs dev team that was responsible for the initial iOS 7 jailbreak says that they’re not working on the iOS 8 jailbreak, simply because jailbreaking was getting “boring” for them. This isn’t too surprising to hear, as jailbreaking certainly isn’t as exciting as it was when the iPhone first came out in 2007, and coming out with a new jailbreak tool every year can be a bit exhausting to say the least.

Overall, it seems that many of the popular jailbreak developers that have been in the scene for a while are getting a bit tired. While many of them are still working on various tweaks for jailbroken devices, the actual jailbreak is something that not many developers are working on at the moment.

iOS-7.1.1-jailbreak

However, the Pangu team behind the iOS 7.1 jailbreak have been the only ones so far to say that they plan on releasing an iOS 8 jailbreak, but it’s not without its challenges, of course. Apple patched up many of the exploits that Pangu used in the iOS 7.1 jailbreak and since the team didn’t actually come up with the exploit themselves, they might have more difficulty this time around.

Currently, the only hints that we have that an iOS 8 jailbreak is coming is from Pangu’s Weibo page, where it teased that it plans to release an iOS 8 jailbreak at some point during the fall. Pangu was responsible for releasing the iOS 7.1.2 jailbreak that is still standing currently, and many users are still running iOS 7 just to have the ability to be jailbroken.

Details on Pangu’s iOS 8 jailbreak are extremely scarce, though, so we’re not getting our hopes up just yet, even if the iOS 8 betas have allegedly been jailbroken in the past.

It will be interesting to see what the iOS 8 jailbreak looks like and when it will release, especially since iOS 8.1 was released earlier this week. It took Apple nearly 6 months to release the first major update to iOS 7, while it’s only taking the company one month to release iOS 8.1. It’s possible that Pangu could just go straight to iOS 8.1 when they eventually release their jailbreak.

Apple no doubt patched up a lot of things in iOS 8 to make it harder for jailbreak developers to crack it, but they always seem to find a way around it.
