iOS 9 Release Date: What to Expect Right Now

Published

on

The iOS 9 release date is confirmed for the fall but there’s a chance it could land before September 23rd. With Apple rumors swirling, we want to take a look at what iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can expect from Apple and the upcoming iOS 9 release date.

In June, Apple took the stage at WWDC 2015 in San Francisco and announced a handful of new products including a new Apple Music platform, a new OS X El Capitan update for Mac, and an iOS 9 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

On stage, the company outlined many of the key iOS 9 details. Apple detailed key iOS 9 features, it confirmed the release of an iOS 9 beta, it revealed which devices will be getting the update, and it made the iOS 9 release date official. Sort of.

In typical Apple fashion, the company confirmed a release window not a specific release date. The iOS 9 release date will be coming to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch sometime this fall but exactly when remains a bit of a mystery as we approach the month of September.

Apple isn’t talking about the iOS 9 release date just yet but thanks to a mountain of evidence, we have some idea about when we can expect the company to replace its iOS 8.4.1 update.

With Apple rumors starting to firm up, we want to take a look at a few things you can expect from the iOS 9 release date for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

If this is your first major iOS upgrade, this will bring you up to speed on the latest rumors and Apple’s iOS release protocol. If you are an iOS veteran, this will remind you of Apple’s way of doing things and help you put the unannounced iOS 9 release date into perspective.

iOS 9 Launch Date

Apple hasn’t sent out media invites yet but we already know when we can expect the company to show off new hardware and the finished version of iOS 9.

According to BuzzFeed, Apple will be hosting an iPhone 6s launch event the week of September 7th. The launch date should land on September 9th, the same day that Apple launched the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 8 last year.

There, you can expect Apple to go over some of the iOS 9 update’s features in detail. You can also expect the company to announce a very specific iOS 9 release date. So if you’re interested in installing iOS 9 on your phone or tablet, you’ll probably want to tune into Apple’s event, assuming there is a live stream.

Last year, Apple sent out invites for its September 9th event on August 28th. Given that this year is mirroring last year, we could see the company send out invites in a few short days.

iOS 9 Release Date

Apple obviously isn’t talking about the iPhone 6s yet but thanks to rumors, we have some pretty good leads regarding its release date.

First, we’ll start with what we know about Apple and how it releases its iOS updates and iPhones. Here, we list the last three major iPhone and iOS releases. You don’t have to look very closely to notice a pattern:

  • iOS 6 release date on September 19th
  • iPhone 5 release date on September 21st (Friday)
  • iOS 7 release date on September 18th
  • iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c release date on September 20th (Friday)
  • iOS 8 release date date on September 17th
  • iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release date on September 19th

By now, you’ve probably noticed that the past three iOS updates arrived two days before the arrival of the new iPhone(s). And at this point, there’s no reason to believe that anything different will happen this year with the iOS 9 release and the release of the iPhone 6s.

iOS-9-9 1.57.38 PM

The iPhone 6s release date is rumored for September 18th or September 25th which means that you can expect the iOS 9 release date to be September 16th or September 23rd.

At this point, the September 18th iPhone 6s release date is the most credible which means that September 16th is the date that you’ll want to circle on the calendar in pencil. It’s not confirmed but all signs are pointing to an iOS 9 release date on September 16th.

iOS 9 Release Time

Apple adheres to a predictable iOS release protocol. That includes the release date and that also includes the iOS release time for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Unless Apple drastically shakes things up, you can expect the iOS 9 release to land for everyone on the same day. That means iPhone 4s. That means iPad 2. That means iPhone 6. Everyone should get the iOS 9 update on the same day. And that day, again, is probably September 16th.

iOS-9-7 1.57.38 PM

As for the iOS 9 release time, you can expect Apple to deliver the update between 8AM and 10AM PST on release day. This is standard protocol and it’s what iPhone and iPad users around the world have come to expect from Apple and its iOS release dates.

We typically see some initial hiccups during peak installation time (read: right when the update is released) so if you don’t want to be bothered with problems, expect to have to download the iOS 9 update a few hours after the initial release.

iPhone 6s Launch Date

Apple hasn't sent out media invites for its inevitable iPhone launch event but it doesn't really need to at this point.

BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski has all but confirmed the iPhone 6s launch event for September 9th. This is the same date that Apple used for the iPhone 6 launch.

Unless disaster strikes, this is when you can expect Apple to talk about the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus for the first time. You can also expect Apple to run down other products including iOS 9 and the new Apple TV.
