The Nightingale Sleep System creates a customized blanket of white noise for your bedroom that promises to keep annoying sounds out, help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep through the night. That’s a bold promise and there are no shortage of sleep aids that make similar claims.
After using the Nightingale for three months as part of my smart home It’s become an essential part of my sleeping routine. I recently tried a week without it to see if I would notice a difference and I certainly did. Here’s why I like the Nightingale Sleep System from Cambridge Sound Management.
This system is incredibly simple to use. You plug it into the outlet or outlets in your bedroom. Use the iPhone or Android app to choose what kind of sound blanket you want based on your room and if you need the system to deal with tinnitus or snoring, pick a sleep schedule and you’re ready to go.
The Nightingale comes in either one or two outlet models. You pick the pack you need based on the size of your room. The outlets plug in to a normal wall outlet and include pass through power so you don’t have to give up an outlet. We run a nightstand’s worth of chargers, lights and a heating pad on one and use the other with a sweeper when we sweep the bedroom. they work even in the corner, partially behind a nightstand.
If you want, you can use the Nightingale as a night light, with green, yellow, red, blue or white light. My wife and I did not use this feature since it was too bright for our tastes.
To set up Nightingale, you download the app and answer some questions about the room you are using it in. In addition to the type of room, you enter information about the materials in the room so that the sound blanket is tuned for your bedroom. It’s a different sound if you use it in a bedroom with loads of absorbing materials than if you use it in a concrete floor room or one with hardwood floors and high ceilings.
There are over a dozen different sound blanket options. After looking through them and entering information about our bedroom I chose the Snoring blanket, but I also tested the general blanket during this review. Both work well for helping me fall asleep and stay asleep.
Users can also choose a range of nature sounds including a rainstorm. While I like the rainstorm, it wasn’t something our two dogs loved. They share the bedroom with us and don’t mind the white noise, but the random bits of thunder tended to wake them up.
One of the things I love about the Nightingale Sleep System is that it works without asking you to change your habits, wear a special device or change the habits of someone else in the bedroom. Many of the sleep aids I’m asked to review require a change from not just me, but also my wife. With the Nightingale, there is no change other than getting better sleep.
It also works out great even though we have a very different sleep schedule. At least two or three times a week I go to bed a few hours later than my wife. I have the Nightingale set up to turn on about the time she normally goes to bed and it’s still going when I go to sleep. At 6 AM it turns off so that we can wake up easily.
The system allows you to control the volume. I live on the edge of town, but close enough to an Interstate construction project that I’ve switched between 3 and 5 for the volume of the white noise. It does a good job of blocking out the noises in the neighborhood and the construction noises on nights where the crew worked all night. Sharp loud noises will still make it through, like the neighbor’s dog barking 8 feet from the bedroom window at 11 PM every Thursday.
I find that when I sleep with the Nightingale on, I sleep better and I wake up less. It’s not a magic solution that is going to fix bad habits like using an iPhone in the bed, but because it is on and in the background it works even when I spend an hour watching my iPad in bed with headphones. There’s no fiddling with options at night after it’s set up so I simply lay down and fall asleep. After going back to sleeping without it for a week, it’s definitely something that helps me sleep better. There are still times where one of our dogs wakes me up to go out in the middle of the night, but overall I am sleeping better every night. You can check out clinical studies on the system if you want to learn more about the stats.
