With the wallet-friendly Moto E5 Plus release almost here it’s time to start weighing your options before you buy a budget Android phone. In this guide we’ll go over everything you need to know and explain why you should, and maybe shouldn’t, wait for the impressive Moto E5.

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone you have plenty of options in 2018. Even if you’re on a tight budget, there are a few devices you’ll want to consider. And while the Moto G6 is a great phone for $249, the Moto E5 is even more affordable.

Motorola’s E5 isn’t your only option when it comes to cheap phones. In fact, we’ve outlined a few in the link above. That said, those looking to stay under $200 will want to heavily consider Moto’s latest phone.

Moto E5 Details & Release Date Rumors

The new Moto G6 will likely have the most to offer for under $199. Moto recently confirmed both the new Moto G6 and a new Moto E5 series for 2018. However, the release date is still somewhat of a mystery, although they should arrive before the end of May.

Furthermore, Motorola will offer three different versions of the E5 this year. And while that’s somewhat confusing, the E5 Plus or E5 Play are the two you’ll want to keep in mind. And while the E5 Play is an ultra-affordable phone with a removable battery, it’s the Plus-model that’s exciting. You’ll get a huge 6-inch screen and nearly 2-day battery life at an affordable price. Better yet, the Moto E5 Plus looks like a Galaxy S9 or most phones from 2018 with a long and skinny edge-to-edge display. Pair that with a premium design for under $200, and you can see the appeal. In fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons you’ll want to wait for it before buying something cheap from 2017.

So when can you get one? Well, we’re not sure yet. That said, Motorola typically releases its new phones in May or early June. We’re expecting something similar here in 2018. The company states the Moto G6 and E5 will arrive “this spring”, so we’ll update once we know more. Verizon recently said they’ll arrive around May 24th.

With these phones official and highly tempting, we’re just stuck waiting for an official release date announcement. And with that information on the way, many of you will want to hold off on buying a new phone until you see these budget phones in action. They’re truly impressive for the price.

That said, there are also a few reasons why you might want to skip the budget phone and buy something else today or in the near future.

Wait for the Best Software & Support

Wait for the Best Software & Support

When it comes to buying a budget smartphone you have a lot of choices. However, most of those "budget" phones come with old and outdated software or never see updates.

With the Moto E5, you'll get the latest Android 8 Oreo out of the box. That's a big deal, not to mention you know you'll get updates for at least a year. This is Motorola, after all.

Then, budget phones from most other companies have custom bloatware over stock Android, which makes those updates arrive even later. So while you might be tempted to get a cheaper device by some of the competition, don't. While the price is one of the biggest factors when it comes to buying the Moto E series, having quality software comes in a close second. It'll even get Android P faster than most, so that's a plus.
