How to Transfer Your Games to Xbox One X with a Hard Drive

Using a hard drive to transfer your games to Xbox One X is easy and fast. All you need is a USB 3.0 hard drive with 500GB of storage and nothing on it. If you don’t already have a hard drive for this, pick one from Gotta Be Mobile’s round-up of best Xbox One hard drives.

Connect your hard drive to your Xbox One using the USB 3.0 cable that came with it.

Next, allow your Xbox One to format the drive. This shouldn’t take that long. Select Format Storage Device.This will delete anything that you already have on it.

Type in a name for the drive.

You need to decide if you want to use the drive to hold all your files going forward. Select Keep Current Location if you don’t plan on leaving this hard drive attached to your original Xbox One after you upgrade to Xbox One X.

Now, press the Xbox logo on your controller to go to the Home area. Click on the My Games and Apps button in the bottom-left corner of your screen.

Highlight every game that you’d like to move to your new console and press the Menu button on your controller.

Select Manage game.

Select Copy All.

Your console will immediately begin moving the game and any downloadable content that you own to your hard drive. Don’t unplug the drive, even if it looks like the transfer has stopped. How to Transfer Your Games to Xbox One X with Network Transfer

Transferring your games to Xbox One X using a network transfer is slower than moving them with a hard drive, but you don’t need to buy any extra accessories to make the transfer happen.

First, go to your Xbox One. Press the Xbox logo on your controller to open the Xbox Guide.

Use the left joystick on your Xbox One controller to navigate to the Settings cog. It’s the option to the far right inside the Guide.

Select Settings.

Inside the Settings app, select Network from the menu on the left. It’s the third menu item from the top.

Select Network Transfer.

Select Allow Network Transfer.

At the Home screen of your Xbox One X, press the Xbox logo in the middle of your controller to open the Xbox Guide.

Inside the Xbox Guide, select Settings by moving your left-joystick to the cog in the top-right corner of the guide.

Select Settings again.

Select Network from the left menu.

Now select Network Transfer.

Select your original Xbox One under Local Consoles.

Choose all the games that you’d like to move to your new console over your network. Use the Select All button if you’d like to move them all.

Choose Internal if your console asks where you’d like to store the games.

Select Copy.

Now, wait for the game transfer to complete. Again, this transfer may take a while if you have a lot of games and both of your consoles are connected to each other over Wi-Fi. Be patient with the transfer, and don’t unplug either of your consoles until the transfer finishes. Also, transfers automatically stop when someone plays a game on either console.
